as for twinkage, I'm mostly conserned with minor stuff to get me started (fine steel, some minor magic stuff, epics, etc..)

I strongly advise agains making a monk you cannot properly twink. That weight limitation is pretty annoying, having to run back to town for every 2 bear pelts you want to sell. Also, 90% of lvl 1-35 monks out there today are twinks in full Dragon Haste/Fungi/KD/SoS you will be competing for groups with. If you by any chance come to sol ro and still want to play a monk I have a Adamantite Bo Stick and CCS I'd be willing to part with, can't sell them for any decent price anyway.
other than that, from what i remember luclin and sol ro were ok choices as well.

Saying someone shouldnt make a monk because they cant twink them is absurd. How do you think monks levelledwhen they couldnt twink? How many groups do YOU know of that say "Do u hve dragon haste d00d" before letting you in the group? ive never run into one as my warrior.

I was not saying she shouldn't make a monk, just pointing out that with all those twinks running around, combined with the problems monks face making money due to weight limitations she could have a hard time.
And about groups, yes, I often judge melees by equipmentwhen making a group (of course if they're not people I know or something). I would always take an Epic ranger into my group over one welding lammys. I'd take a warrior in ToV armor over one in HatePlate.
For casters, I don't really care, if I know that they know how to play and they have the level they can be wearing an FBR for all I care.

And as for the monks that first leveled, Pre-Kunark, you could still see a lot of Monks, and high level monks still used Hand to Hand.
Then Kunark REALLY introduced Monk 1hB to a greater extent, and it also introduced Iksar.
Iksar, at the time, only really had two classes that their race was suited for. Iksar could be okay Shaman, and had decent Wisdom for it (although the plate restriction was bothersome).
Iksar also added a CHOICE to what race your monk could be. And a good choice, at that. They had things like Regeneration and Forage. Also, their No-Plate Penalty didn't effect Iksar Monks in the least.
So you saw a sudden jump in the monk population as people discovered things like Fighting Batons and Trance Sticks, and were eager to try out the new race.
After that, most monks were twinks. It happened again with Velious. More l337 Monk gear appeared (Phase Spider, Haze Panther, whatever).
So yeah, lately, most any monk you see is a twink. And playing a newbie Monk is definately difficult, with so many skills to keep up, the weight limitations hindering loot carrying abilities, etc.
But then, I'm not a monk, so.. what do I know,
And I'm probably gonna play a Sol Ro Monk, as it seems a lot of ECers I would love to hang out with are on Sol Ro (There are other ECers I would love to hang out with on other servers to, but it seems like there are a lot on Sol Ro).
