As Otaku said you are missing the point.
This isnt' about the teaching of religion.
This is about the teaching on ONE religion to the extreme while ignoring any bad aspects.
I am all for teaching about religions in public schools. Especially the main 7.
But where are the teachins about Bhudism, Christianity, Hindu teachings, etc, etc. I don't see them.

Azizza, you're right that the classes for all the religions would be best, and far better than the one class for Islam. However, at least to me, any class that will help to spread some understanding is an improvement and a positive, not a negative. Though a single class for only a single religion isn't ideal, it's better than no education towards any of them.

We can pretty much assume that a child will have at least some familiarity with christianity in this society, and probably a fairly positive impression of it. However, Islam is comparitively unknown, and a fair amount of a kid's knoledge about it is probably coming from these trying times, which will not leave the best of impressions. Hopefully, with a bit more knoledge, they'll be ready to look at what's going on with more understanding, and be able to make up their own minds about what's going on in the world.

I'll admit, the use of "jihad dice game" made be blink once or twice (just as "The Happy Crusade card game" would if it existed ) but from what I can get out of the article, it's not really a big part of the course. It's seems like the course much more about understanding the religion.

And as for why only positive aspects of islam are mentioned, well, that's how the education system works in those grades. You never hear about bloodly native american wars in junior high, you see "happy indians in teepees, living off the land!" At least the positive is better than nothing.

I am anti-smoking. My parents forced me to breathe their second hand smoke for 18 years as they puffed their way to blackened lungs. I can't stand the smell, the sight, the choking feeling.

I feel that the OWNER of the restaraunt should be the ONLY one to make the decision to allow, or disallow smoking in HIS restaraunt. If you don't like the atmosphere of HIS restaraunt, you are not obliged or forced to go there and eat, but the state should NOT have the right to tell him he can't let people smoke in his restaraunt.

Sadly and proof of point, last I heard the revenue for restaraunt owners in California has gone down since the passing of that law. And now Arizona has passed a similar law, but at least it is only for restaraunts and not bars too.

And let's not forget the staff. Coal miners, by your logic, shouldn't bitch about Black Lung Disease, but rather find another job, right? Employers have no obligations with respect to the safety of their employees, right?

Use of lead paint is illegal. The use of cigarettes is not (yet). The staff does not HAVE to work at that establishment. They choose to apply and work there.

Why would I put forth the effort to own, operate and manage a business if I can't make a living at it because the goverment runs all my customers away? Isn't it bad enough I'd get taxed twice on all income?

Let's see how many disincentives we can engineer for the small business owner so the top 6% of the world's population can continue to own 59% of the world's wealth, eh?

I HATE smoking. I find second hand smoke disgusting and vile. Yet people should have the right to smoke and drink if they desire, and run their businesses the way they want to in order to attract the customers they want in their establishment.

If I remember properly, you're only taxed twice if you've incorporated.

The business, being a legal entity (unless it is a "home business", which leaves your personal assets open to litigation) is taxed on its profit. Then any income you take home, like in the case of a salary, is also taxed.

Hm. I was always under the impression that a business, unless incorporated, was reguarded as an extention of the owner/owners. After incorporation, a company would be reguarded as a legal entity seperate from its board of directors and officers.

I believe it depends on the state and type of business. In Arizona in the case of a Limited Liability Partnership (the business type I'm currently looking into), you don't have to be incorporated to be a legal entity and protect your personal assets, but your business gets taxed AND you get taxed.

Salaries are operating expenses, and debit against the profit. Your salary--and that of any employees--is taxed only as personal income.

It's frankly not possible to waive certain rights--like that of a safe workplace. I noticed you only addressed lead paint, of all the examples. I assume, then, that it's perfectly all right to have rodents and bugs all over the kitchen, save money by not washing up quite so often, and store chemicals near the food to save the money of having a store room?

After all, if people want clean, safe food, they have every right to go somewhere else, right?

I dont' agree with being able to tell you what you can do in your own business or home.

One state(or county maybe), can't remember where, has even tried to ban smoking in your own home. They used some BS polution law. I would like to see them enforce this.

There is just no way I see how the goverment can come onto your property.

Case in point:
We recently built a barn. Now accourding to some obscure law we need all kinds of permits and fees etc.
Frankly I didn't care about them and my parents didn't know.
One day some guy from the county comes out and starts nosing around in our back yard WITHOUT permission to be on the land (read trespassing) Now. not knowing who this guy is he gets confronted at gunpoint.

Of course when he showed his credentials I stopped pointing the gun directly at him.
However he starts going on about how we had to pay all these fees and get approval to build etc. My reply to him is something along the lines of "Blow me". He threatened to call the county sherrif. So I grabbed a cordless phone and procceded to give him the home phone number off the top of my head. Did I mention that me and the county sherriff, along with most of the officers in the area, are shooting buddies? Ooops guess I forgot to point that out.

The guy is quite flustered by this point and leave. The results? We never hear anything again. Barn has been up for about 2 or 3 years now and not a word has been said.
Facts are facts.
My land, my rules. No I am not going to start growing Pot or something there, that is a whole different ball game. But no one is going to tell me how to use my land as long as it is in a legal manner.
The same should go for anyplace else.

Just because I don't like smoking, does that make smoking stupid?

Once again, Kanid, you prove your willingness to speak on subjects where you lack the first clue. If your only recourse in a discussion is to call others names or attempt to apply labels you obviously don't understand, it would generally be better to stay quiet rather than prove yourself incompetent to participate.

And, just for the record, here is yet one more example in a long string that proves your only answer to arguments you haven't the wit to address is to call people names.

quote:
"Mommy, mommy, Bloodsage said something I can't understand again, and I don't know how to answer!"

"It's all right, dear. Just call him names and you'll feel better."

Next time you don't know how to respond, why don't you try a) asking an intelligent question, or b) shutting the fuck up?

Is it honestly your contention that smoking poses no health risks, either to the smoker or others? Can you really be that stupid?

As a matter of fact, smoking should be banned in restaurants for exactly the reasons you listed, and I illustrated: it's a health hazard to everyone who enters the establishment.

Your overall argument is exactly equivalent to repealing worker safety laws for miners--or anyone else, for that matter--on the grounds that anyone who doesn't want their job to kill them should do something else for a living. It's exactly the same as allowing restaurant owners to pump hazardous chemicals through their ventilation systems, or perhaps spray them from nozzles in the ceilings, on the grounds that anyone who wants to eat without endangering their health should eat elsewhere.

Smoking is only legal at all these days because willful ignorance such as yours, combined with a multi-billion dollar lobby in Congress, keeps it that way.

Smoking is stupid, by any standard one chooses to apply. Ordinarily, there's no reason to outlaw stupidity. In this case, however, the activity is also hazardous to those around the stupid person. Not to mention costing taxpayers such as myself untold mega-$$ to pay healthcare expenses for the stupid people who are poor.

That is unacceptable.

In conclusion, if you're unable to have an intelligent conversation, why don't you simply keep quiet in the future? You haven't the faintest fucking idea what my politics are, if any, and your ham-handed attempt to label them in the manner most convenient to justify your ignorance is offensive.

Labeling me, of all people, as a socialist, proves beyond doubt that you not only don't understand anything I've said--ever--but that you don't even understand the labels you so freely apply to others as a substitute for thinking.

In short, Kanid, you're an idiot.
