The economy on teleports in EQ doesn't work. .....

SOME of the problem is greedy people. Personally I never asked for anything if I was headed in the same direction anyway. If I was in a "Let's port people around" mood,or I was just screwing off instead of XP grinding I'd charge 5p (Nekkid folks were always free.)
However, having played a dr00d for a number of levels in some of the more "port-happy" spots, I can attest that it gets QUITE annoying to forget to turn-on RP and wind up with numerous tells asking for ports here and there. THIS is when I'd say "Sure, for 25 plat." Some folks were willing to pay, and it made up for me porting and waiting on them while taking time out of my xp grinding. (It's also never "just" 5 mins, because they're never at the rings, or they want to stop at a merchant on the way to meet you, or they're on the other side of nowhere, etc.)

This is where the inflated prices start, and some folks make dr00ds of their own for port purposes, and imagine the phat cash rolling in as they charge 20-30p a head for full groups of porters all day. (never happens either )

Now, I'll agree the 50p "port off velious/luclin/ass-end-of-nowehere" fees are silly. I thought it was nuts when people sent me tells, or shouted in Great Divide asking for ports to Antonica and offered 100p+. Some folks just have cash to burn and that also goes towards inflating the prices.

It's one of those things that looks simple on the surface, but is always more complex than first appears. Greed is A factor, but not THE factor.

Now if they'd only do that with ports

They already did. You go to a wizzy spire, get a free npc port up to nexus on luclin, then from there you can get a free npc port down to Kunark (dreadlands) Odus (Tox) Antonica (west commons) or Faydwer (Gfay)

Or you could be a MONK and hardly ever die, and thus not care about bindpoints.

I am a monk, hardly ever die, but when I do, you'd better believe I care about my bindpoint, especially if there's no cleric in the group to rez me or the cleric died too. Even at 200, FD never succeeds 100% of the time, you know...
