Could anyone brief me on how they work, can you go anywhere from any pad? Or just to Luclin? I heard you could go from like Toxx to GFay just by using the NPC ports...
You can - but it will take you between 15 minutes to a half hour. Even if you get to the port just before the spires go off, the ones in the Nexus go off at the same time, so it's 20-30 minute wait until they go off again.
On Xegony, wizards make a killing in the Nexus offering TLs for people who JUST missed the port... nothing like zoning into the Nexus and seeing the message that the Spires will become active again in 15 minutes...
Likewise, I dislike people quiting while still loaded up with stuff...
Buy Patchwork from Players, not Leather from Merchants, etc....
I just prefer to keep things away from NPCs.
Regardless, I'm sure this will cut into MY business...

I disagree. There is a great editorial explaining why on Castersrealm.
Think about it this way, if everyone had easy access to cash because it was so pleantiful, then why bother using it? the value of things would go through the roof meaning you'd have to have more to get things. 1k items jump to 2k.... 20k items hit 35k.... I'm sure you see where that's going.
And Jered, you're not cutting anyone out. It costs *0* to port to/from the Nexus. Technically you *are* exploiting your fellow players. Granted they're paying for convience of 'on-demand', meaning their time saved is worth something....

Ultima Online is a perfect example of what happens when you do not have any money sinks.
The economy inflates to the point where all money becomes meaningless. I knew people in UO that had over 100 million gold, there was no real economy there.
Money sinks are a neccessary thing to have if you want a stable economy in a game. If there is no way to get rid of money, it will become useless in a short amount of time.
Faster friggin ports very well might, however.
Secondly;

Not true. I find that the ones in Norrath go off a teeny bit after the ones in the Nexus, such that it's possible to go to Norrath and then come immediatly back.

Then Prexus works differently than Xegony.
After porting to Nexus I usually get the "fifteen-minute warning" immediately. Same thing going the other way.

I'm sure many people with more time than money on their hands will use this method to get between the 4 zones connected to the Nexus. Not much worse than some boats, really. I've taking the OT-TD-Oasis route many times, and never really minded the time it took, got used to it after a while. Now that I'm of the level where I can cross the Dreadlands in reasonable safety, I'll have people tp there ocassionally, if I have extra cash or can find a guild member to do it for free. But once I get SoL, I think I'd be willing to go the DL-Nexus-GFay route if I need to buy or sell stuff, rather spend the time than money, unless speed is a particular issue. Depends. As I've said, a lot of poor and/or frugal people will be using the Nexus as a tp method, or people like me who hate sitting around begging for a port. (I've seen someone in WC shout for half an hour that he wanted to be teleported to Butcherblock; he could have gone to East Freeport and taken the boat in less time than that!) I've walked from Freeport to Qeynos before, just to save money. [ 12-17-2001: Message edited by: Troodon ]

Understand your point, but fail to see how it applies to this particular topic. The scions don't charge anything to teleport, just hail them, and they'll give you the glass shard for free.
Merchants have their place still. Need people to sell common items and tradeskill supplies, spells, and such. And somebody to buy the common loot that players would never buy. And leather is better than patchwork, although patchwork is more cost efficient. Merchant prices are set higher than some armor or weapons are really worth to players precisely to encourage trade between players. And merchants will usually pay less than items are worth to players for the same reason. Trust me, merchants aren't going to hurt anybody's business. Only effect merchants have on a player-run economy is to set max/min acceptable prices; nobody will sell for less than what a merchant will pay for an item, and nobody will pay more for an item than a merchant will sell it for (usually, there are some weird prices sometimes where a merchant badly undersells, like a merchant selling a lambent breastplace for 57pp, but this is the exception, not the rule, and players will rarely ever sell items like this to merchants anyway). Well, can't very well have the teleports active ALL THE TIME. And have to allow people a reasonable amount of time to get to and from them. Not to mention, some people at the spires may not care to be teleported to Luclin, need to allow them time to get out of the way (I was in GFay, if you don't have Luclin, standing to close to the spires when they go active puts you under Kelethin, a place an iksar defintely doesn't want to be!) 15 minutes isn't un reasonable for a Nexus tp, I think. Of course two consecutive ones will take you some time. But not an unreasonable amount. Like the boats, this it put in for a reasonable alternative for people not willing or not able to pay a wizard or druid for the service of transportation. If the boats were instantaneous, nobody would ever pay a wizard or druid for transportation, the time it takes in an intentional "time sink" as you put it to insure the profitability of tp spells. I'm sure even if wizards or druids are given the ability to tp to the moon (if they haven't already, anybody know) people will still use these if their money is more valuable or scarce than their time.

Um, if you don't have Luclin, why are you getting a shard from the Scion? No shard, no TP.
And I'm not cutting into anyones business either. If I didn't use the nexus, I'd just be getting guild ports or running there. I dont have enough money to be paying greedy wizards and druids 50+ plat 3 times a day.
Yes, greedy. Flame me if you want, but last I checked, mana didn't cost you plat. Especially when a bard offers to sing mana song for you on the other side. Maybe I'd feel diferently if bards could make money by clicking a button, but we cant, and it really chaffs me when a druid or a wizard refuses a port when I offer full mana via song as payment.

I never charge plat for a port. I never have. I also don't turn down donations. If someone wants to spend some money to get somewhere quicker, I'm not going to argue. I especially don't mind taking people if I'm going there anyway.
What I do hate is when I'm with my group (when I manage to get one) and I'm healing and fighting and such only to get a tell in the middle of combat: 'Can u port me plz now k thx?'

That's why I gave up my druid, you can be in VP and still get a tell "can u pick me up in EC and port me?"
Finally whenever I was on the druid and people asked for ports, Id always say yes for some ungodly price (500pp+). Eventually...people stopped bugging me
Had someone pay it before, broke my record for porting donations =)

*cough* They did cost that and more at one point.
Also, It's not just the mana, it's our time as well, leaving where we are to zone, and then zone back, is a pretty obnoxious thing to have to do (especially if you weren't in a TP Zone)

No shard = safe-point gate modifier, SoL or not. I had happen to me once, ran inbetween the spires with Particles off at the wrong time. Put me at Kelethin. Where I was running from.

The thing I don't understand is why the hell a wizzy would turn down someone asknig for a Trans. This takes up less then 20 seconds of your time, AND you don't even have to go with them. It can't be THAT inconvenient to where you can't Trans someone.

cuz for most TL's it also costs a 12pp reagent. Portal Shard..maybe its fragment..still costs 12 plat.

Can you please point me to the crack you're smoking?
The 'off' TL's cost a plat to throw. These are the 'non-main' port sites like Nektulos Forest.... The small shard required is a 1pp reagent and from the spell lists I can't find anything that uses a larger reagent. All the 'core portle sites' (GFay, Tox, DL, Iceclad, etc) are just mana.

also, they fixed the bug that teleported you to the zone's "safe spot" if you didn't have a shard. This morning, I was standing in the GFay spires for a while, waiting to do a transfer for a guildie, when the spires went off. All that happened was some red text appeard in the chatbox that said something like, 'You do not have the nessesary component required to travel to Luclin.'
Also, Wizards get the Nexus Gate at 20, and the Nexus Portal at 29(dunno about TL since I didn't find the spell.) I've heard they are actually going to fix it so that you can teleport to Luclin from Norrath via Wizard portal/translocate.
quote:
Mightion Defensor had this to say about Punky Brewster:

Wrong answer. I had no shard, no Luclin, was standing on top of the spire(not recommended if you don't have 195 safe fall!) and when the port when active, I got teleported underneath the souhern end of Kelethin! Verified with others in my guild who don't have Luclin or a glass shard, happened to them to. That's why at the GFay spires you notice people hanging around OUTSIDE the spires instead of in.

Ah, this would fix the problem I had, getting sent to Kelethin (which is NOT a safe point if you're iksar!!!) when the spires went active, not having a glass shard (or even Luclin yet!) Many people will be happy with this fix, especially those not welcome in Kelethin.

Hmmm... I didn't know this had been a problem... I'd never heard anyone complaining about it, and in a zone that usually has 100+ people in it, there's always SOMETHING being whined about.
Now that you mention it, I did notice a lot of people hanging around outside the spires...
