Legacy Of The Wizard for NES by Broderbund (play as the family dog!)
Deadly Towers for NES by Broderbund (the most addictive crappy-looking crappy-feeling hackneyed game ever)
Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode! for NES (the first NES game where you get laid and, in doing so, refill your health meter)
Rambo for NES (Go figure; this game was good. Mechanics almost identical to Zelda 2)
Plok for SNES by Tradewest (The music makes you feel like you're watching late 70's foreign films or softcore or something)
Paladin's Quest for SNES by Enix (The Pastel-colored RPG worth playing)
Shining In The Darkness for Genesis (The best dungeon crawl on the Genesis, period.)
I'd mention the Shining Force games but they got -plenty- of respect, thank you very much.
Dragon Force for the Saturn (100 samurais versus 100 harpies on the same screen, and 8 stories to boot? Hook me up)
Axelay for SNES by Konami (already mentioned, but a FINE contender with Gradius for best SNES shooter)
Space Megaforce for SNES (also an incredible shooter)
Zanac for NES (also an incredible shooter)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for SNES by Konami (NOT the arcade translation, but the sidescrolling adventure. If you used any turtle other than Donatello, you were doing it wrong.)
Super Mario RPG for SNES by Square/Nintendo (for kids? maybe. still a great game and considering the cast, a great story and humor)
San Fransisco Rush ?2040? for Dreamcast (for battle mode only)
Actraiser 2 for SNES by Enix (quite possibly the purest and hardest side-scrolling beatemup made.)

There were Giants that walked the earth, in olden days... *sigh*

I LOVED that game!

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl, we ate lobster, drank piña coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over, and over?

Well, besides agreeing with almost everything that's been said, such as Illusion of Gaia and Terrnigma (Which is my favorite game of all time), you havn't mentioned any computer games.
Things like the Exile series, or Earth 2140, predicessor of the well-known 2150.
This world needs singing hampsters. This is a idea who's time has come.

There's another game, in the same style, you may want to look for, called Warheads.

The artist formerly known as Zephyer Kyuukaze.

Computer games?

Galcon - a nice text based game (with a colored text map) that was about galactic conquest. The fun of having a fleet of a hundred ships suddenly drop in on an undefended planet was matched by only one thing.....

the banner that ran along the bottom of the screen.

Depending on what color was winning, you might see things like:
"Look at all the blue out there, the Smurfs are on a rampage."
"Look at all the white. It's wintertime in galaxy land."
"There's an awful lot of red out there. The commies are taking over."

or random stuff like:
"For sale cheap: One used TIE Fighter. Call Darth for details."
"Blue has 143 ships in transit. I wonder where they're headed?"

It was a simple game, but fun. You could never bring yourself to turn off that banner either.

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.

I thikn every school had those games... Carmen Sandiego games, I mean. And things like The Oregon Trail. I'm sure you remember that game. Didn't it seem so COOL when you were, like, in fourth grade? "Let's see if I can make it to Oregon as a Teacher!" And trying to shoot down birds so they landed in the rivers, and made that cool little 'Bloop!' noise? Or becomeing depressed when a family member died, only to be cheered up moments later when you found a abandoned wagon?
That was cool.

Edit:
Once again, someone posts about exact what I was gonna say while I was typeing. I either need faster fingers, or slower board assosiates. And Odell Lake was cool, too.

Totally Rad - NES

Despite the name, it was a great game.

Bill Lambeer's Combat Basketball - SNES

I never knew anything about Bill Lambeer, but that was the only sports game I would play.

The Lufias - SNES

The first didn't have particularly great graphics, but both had great stories, and Lufia 2 is the only game I've cried repeatedly at (something about the music, the dialogue, and the ending makes it so overwhelmingly sad, )

Final Fantasy 2 - SNES

OK, I know, I know, you may say it got plenty of good respect... BUT, I don't feel it got the respect it deserved. I loved the story, It was a good story, and a long one, and was completely revolutionary for it's time. It was also the only Final Fantasy to let you have 5 party members at once,

Phantasy Star series - Sega Genesis, Sega CD
I feel Phantasy Star IV was great. Phantasy Star Online is just weird to me.

I'll second Earthbound.

Dad's going to kill you. Really. He is.

We had the ORIGINAL oregon trail when i was in elementary school. you know, where a bullet was a simple white pixel?

And, Lyinar, is Odell lake that game where you are the fish that eats other fish to get bigger? If so...I had the top score on that game when i was in school!

All times are US/Eastern
