I know it's oblivion with guns, and there are some balance issues with weapons (When aren't there?), but I'm curious as to EC's preferred platform.

PC seems to be the better choice to me, if only because there are a lot of free mods and addons that I can peruse at my leisure similar to Oblivion. However, this decision is marred by the fact that I have a 42" LCD 1080p television hooked up to my Xbox.

Thoughts?

Fair enough. My only question is thus: I was able to run oblivion with some settings turned down moderately smoothly. I've since upgraded my ram to the max XP recognizes. I'm worried Fallout will rape my machine.

But be prepared for Bethesdas ugly ass terrain textures if you get it on 360. Granted, you'd be using those same ugly ass textures on PC if you were worried about performance issues.

Get a better computer and never have to worry about blah blah blah

It's a first person shooter, it's Oblivion (meaning it's only good with mods), and load times are faster on PC. The choice is obvious.

My PC is a 2.8 ghz HT P4 with 2 gb of RAM with a 256 mb 6800GT. It's monitor is a 19-inch CRT monitor. I run games like WoW at 1280x1024.

My 360 has a triple core 3.2ghz GPU, and is connected to my 22-inch widescreen TV, displaying at 1920x1080. The graphics chip in the 360 runs about 150 mhz faster than my PC's graphics card, even if it only has 10 mb of embedded memory.

If I was going to play Fallout, I'd play it on my 360. The last game I played on my PC that was also available for 360 was Overlord, which was not running terribly smoothly on my PC at times.

Get a PC thats not significantly older than the start of the 360s lifecycle.

Wow. Just... Wow.

fake edit: As in, "Just WoW" is the only thing that dinosaur will be able to run.

real edit:
seriously though. pentium 4? 2gb RAM? a 6800GT? a CRT monitor? are you running windows 98 as well?

You live with your parents, work (or used to work) a half decent helpdesk job, yet haven't been able to spare the six hundred quid it'd take to get something that runs Fallout 3.

Haven't felt the need for a better PC until recently... once I get about $1500 I'll prolly build a new one, (got the parts in a newegg wishlist already) but I've got a credit card to finish paying off first. And, oh yeah, saving for a new car, hopefully this fall.

Knock 500 bucks off that list. I built a PC over a year ago that runs Fallout 3 and anything else I can throw at it with max settings. I paid around $1100 when I bought it.

1) You really don't need 6 gigs of ram. I have 4 in my system, XP can only use 3, and I do fine.

2) Why are you paying more for your motherboard than any other component in the system? Is it the Intel i7 requiring that or something?

3) You don't need Vista Ultimate. Vista home should work fine, have everything you need to do, and save you 100 bucks.

The difference between 4 and 6 gigs of RAM should be less than $10. There's no reason not to, especially if you're buying a 64-bit operating system (as you should be)

edit: $10 is a hell of a typo. I had no idea how expensive DDR3 was. Christ.

1. I would get six gigs for the board's triple-channel memory architecture.

2. Yes. And I have an eye towards a bit of furture-proofing, futile though it may be.

3. Is there a 64-bit Vista OEM Home?

Oh, and I obviously don't think that case is hideous. I'm not building a machine like this in a beige box. Red and shiny. Works for me.

Bah, too late to edit.

Fixed the wrong version of Vista - saved $90 by going to Vista Home Basic.

Trying to debate whether I want to get a sound card for it, or just go with the onboard sound. I have always built computers with Sound Blaster cards, even if they have onboard audio.

Get it for PC.

Then install the following :

High-Res Weapon Textures (In-world)
Cross-Repair Weapons
Cross-Repair Armor
VATS accuracy change (Skill is factored in more than Distance)
Custom radio station you can fill with 20 tracks of your own.

Personally I also like these for aesthetics :

High-Res Prewar Money
High-Res Nuka Cola Bottles
Your home's 'Pristine' Nuka Cola machine actually becomes 'Pristine'. Also high-res.
High-Res non-pristine Nuka Cola machines for the rest of the world.

More than anything the Cross-repair mods make the game so much better. If someone can salvage a spring from a switchblade to get a BB gun working, then cross-repairing weapons that are even more alike just makes even more sense.

The cross-repair weapons/armor sounds like the tits; I hate having to murder a shitton of talon company mercs just to keep my decent armor repaired (Because I never find enough enclave/tesla armor'd guys).

And the VATS accuracy change sounds a bit like cheating, but I always did find it retarded that I could personally snipe and hit things from 3x the distance that VATS said I could hit.

Sadly, I wish I could install some of the hires textures; My computer runs it okay, but mostly at low settings. Guess my rig from 2003 needs an overhaul. :/

Thanks for the links, Khyron. I really appreciate them.

The VATS accuracy change isn't really cheating much. Hell, it makes a LOT more sense - as you get better with a weapon skill, your accuracy improves with it. Distance is still a factor, but skill counts for a lot more than it did previously now.

There's a LOT more WIP shit, and there's a ton of stuff for people who're on their 2nd or 3rd playthrough - adding free-roaming to the game after you beat it, allowing levelling up beyond 20 (Problem is, once you can no longer assign skill points it breaks the game and you can't move past that screen), adding new weapons via the workbench, etc.

Whether or not you like the fact that it's Oblivion with guns, at least you know there'll be mods out the ASS for the game.
