I'm thinking about getting a bike to commute to and from work. It will be about a 40 minute ride each way so I want to get a good bike instead of those $50 Wal-mart ones. What's the different between them really though? Also how much should I be expecting to pay for a good bike?

I know Addy got a nice one and paid like 400 bucks for it. Not 100% sure, though.

I know a guy at work who ordered his bike online and he uses it to get to work every day.

I think it cost a pretty penny, but there's also cheaper versions.

I'll ask him about it tomorrow if you want.

It depends really.... I would get a bike for $50 for me, personally, since the bikes outside my store and the ones locked in my backyard get swiped all the time.

Depends on where you live and if bike stealing is common and or if you have proper storage for such things.

A decent bike can run you 200 dollars or more easy.

Find a bike shop in your area that sells something other than the wal-mart brand (I.E., trek, etc) and tell them what you're going to be using it for.

Actually, on a technicality, his usage of peddle is correct. As per Merriam-Webster's website, "peddle" means "to offer or promote as valuable". Since he wants a bike that is valuable and not cheap, he could, possibly, maybe be correct.

Oh fuck why did I even type that, we all know what he meant.

Yeah, if bike theft is really common where you live and/or work (just ask around), I'd just buy a twenty dollar bike at a garage sale or something like that. And yes, locking a bike up might stop someone from stealing it, but they can sure as shit still ruin a bike out of spite.

It wouldn't be stolen. It be locked up at work where it's covered with cameras, or will be in my apartment on the 3rd floor.

I don't know what kind of job you do, but also keep in mind things like climate, your body's natural rate of perspiration, your body odor, and how these things might factor into being presentable once you arrive at work. 40 minutes is a long time to be exercising and still expect to be "fresh."
I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl, we ate lobster, drank piña coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over, and over?

I do 10 hours of mildly physical work as a courier. So an extra 40 minutes of working out ain't gonna add to anything that wasn't going to be there to begin with.

Did you not just buy a new car as well?

Either way, if you do end up getting a bike, make sure you keep hydrated on the way there, during work, and back, and that you gradually increase your exercise load; Don't just expect to get the bike and be able to ride to work, courier for your 10 hours, then ride home all fine and dandy.

Ahahaha! When I bought a mid-range road bike 15 years ago, it was worth more than my wife's car at the time. $500 will buy you a pretty crappy bike that'll probably work for you if you don't mind a lot of inconveniences during your 80 min/day on it.

If you want a decent bike to spend that much time on, look to spend in the neighborhood of $1500, give or take $500. Really good bikes start at #2k and go way up from there. If you look around, you can probably find an older model for $750-ish.

It sort of depends on what your commute looks like and how/if you plan to ride it otherwise. Mountain bikes are versatile and easier to put saddlebags on, but your top speed is way limited and that gets old if your commute is paved. Road bikes are a bit pricier in general and not designed to carry a load, but you'll be going closer to 20mph than 10mph like you would on a mountain bike.

Your best bet is to decide how much you're willing to pay, then see if anything in that price range interests you. Go to a large, specialist bike shop rather than a department or even sporting goods store.

Best bike I ever got was a hybrid, worth $2000 retail but had it for $1000 since it was an older model and my brother was working at the store. Had plenty of gear range, so I could go uphill Mount Royal without stopping, where my previous $200 mountain Specialized would have me dazed from the effort before I made it halfway through. Yet I could still easily reach 20-25km/h on flat stretches.

I personally would take mountain over road any day.

Hybrids or cyclocross bikes are pretty cool, but they tend to do neither road nor trail as well as the specialist bikes. They're good if you have to do both or don't mind not getting the most out of whatever surface you're on.

You're right though--I should've mentioned them.

Speaking of which, should I buy a whole new bike or just update the components on my '92 Klein? I really like that frame, but decent new components wil cost damn near what a new bike would.

Is bike technology really that different since '92? I don't know anything about them, it just doesn't seem like there'd be a whole lot of innovation there.

Carbon fiber tech is generations ahead of what it was in '92, so yes.
