The first thing I thought when I saw the first picture was, "That looks more like a CRT than an LCD."

In short, that's stupid you're stupid. And out of curiosity, why didn't you get an LCD? Or a Dell FPW or something.

You mean two things that never happen any more on a modern LCD?

Yeah that's a good reason not to get an LCD.

Because that used to happen.

Even though it doesn't happen any more.

You shouldn't get an LCD.

You should stick with the monitors that weigh roughly 8 times more and consume 5 times the electricity, and generate massive amounts of heat.

Because they don't do the thing that LCD's also don't do.

Yeah, it's been about six years since any LCD was made that had either of these problems.

My 24" Gateway, that is less than a year old, has ghosting issues. Not a huge deal, but it is certainly there.

You bought a Gateway and you're expecting it to be in any way comparable to or representative of the norm?

Seriously?

Right around the time an LCD starts getting a few dead pixels, your CRT will be noticeably yellowed anyway.

My mag crt started crapping out at around 5 years with a red tint, but a viewsonic which is the same age is still perfect

Yeah, and some six year old LCD's don't have any dead pixels either.

All the complaints against LCD's are either only found in the cheapest of the cheap or the oldest of the old models.

CRT's will still always have superior picture quality to any LCD though, and it is noticeable (Even if for most, it's not worth mentioning). Especially if you do a lot of art heavy prodjects.

I need an LCD to get back some counter space though. Size is an issue.

I've had my Gateway CRT since 1999 and gone through 3 different PCs with it and it is still in perfect condition. No discoloration, fading, or washout.

Monica has this massive monster of a CRT that is so washed out it's not even funny. I think that thing is near jurrasic though.

On most monitors I've used, the CRTs definately have had truer colors than the LCDs. On the better LCDs, it can sometimes hard to tell though, unless you are watching the same image on a CRT and an LCD at the same time. Then the differences start to pop out at you.

My favorite CRT is still a 20" Optiquest I have. It's about 10 years old, and has yet to have any issues.

You'd be 100% wrong then.

CRT's are still at the top of the food chain for truer colors and clarity. This is true for home entertainment units and projectors as well.

LCD and DLP technologies are far superior overall for various reasons though. CRT's are big and bulky, run hot, and are power hungry. And because the quality difference is completely negligable when the image is moving (As it does in movies and games and such.) Even when the picture is NOT moving there's no REAL loss of visuals overall so the trade off for less size, heat, and power is even better. CRT's have long fallen out of favor for those reasons.

Like I said, outside of art heavy work or work where you are are basically looking at still images for periods of time is the only place it is truely noticeable, but it IS noticeable. You're still not going to lose any real quality though with an LCD even then. I myself would prefer an LCD because of size issues. I didn't say CRT's were the "overall" better choice, but each format DOES have its strengths and weaknesses.

LCD's with 97% true to real color reproduction have been around for years.

Even the most expensive CRT's don't get much closer than that.

And don't forget that phosphors DO wear out, there's just no way around that. Even if you have a ten year old CRT that you consider to "look perfect" odds are good that it's color reproduction has in fact declined a deal since you bought it.
