I like black, but a medium gray looks good too. If your picture has a monochromatic color scheme then a dark shade from that picture works awesome!

The avatars that really need this are the ones where you're looking at part of an image that very obviously flows off the canvas. Adding a border that is not the same color as the background gives the image a much needed sense of composure.
Doesn't work as well when the image already is black at the corners, but it's a small improvement.

Well, I guess a 7 year old screenshot of a pimp on fire isnt going to look fantastic anyway.
Still, on the couple, I liked the 1px thing you did on it, but on the female elf lady looks kinda janky. Like her hair is dirty and makes her collarbone look weird, like an anorexic.
The difference is slight, and I think if your already used to seeing a picture you wont immediatly notice it.

You're looking within the picture for some difference. There isn't one.
What it's doing is creating a black border, 1 pixel wide. Look around the edges and you'll see it.
