Reviving this.

Any suggestions of what I need to buy, that I'll probably not remember?

Ikea has this cool kitchen start up kit for $130. It has cutting boards, dishes, spoons, knives, peelers, wisk, frying pan, tupperware, colinder, etc. in it.

I know I'll forget stuff that I'll need.

Do all your shopping at a dollar store or Wal Mart. If you only pay a dollar for it, you wont be heartbroken if it breaks. Startup kits are pretty, but not worth the money.

Remember to get:

Trash can
Shower curtain
Trash bags
Baggies
Disposable tupperware
Dish soap

What Azakias said. The cheaper the better when starting out, unless you know for a fact that you can afford to not be cheap. When you have some extra money, you can buy pretty stuff. Make sure you also have stuff like bandages and a bottle of whatever pain killer you normally use -- those are things that you tend to need when you need them as opposed to being able to run to the store and grab when you realize they're missing.

Might want to invest in one NOT from a dollar store in this case, though.

I echo Azakias' and Fal's sentiments. My first dish set came from the Good Will for $8.

Actually I got a lot of my "firsts" sets from when I had a roommate decide to bail on me 2 months into a 9 month lease when she suddenly decided she had met the love of her life.

But it worked out pretty well in the end, since I don't live with the nutcase anymore.

We're getting dishes from the BF's mom... Actually we're getting a lot of stuff from her.. (she moves a lot and cleared out her cottages, so there's a ton of stuff in storage).

So, that saves us money.

Yeah, I got a ton of furniture and shit from my dad. My parents got divorced this year and at the time he thought he was going to be selling the house and wanted to empty it as much as humanly possible. So I got a ton of crap from my parents' house - pots and pans, living room furniture, a dining room table and chairs, etc etc etc.

I don't know, at first I had a lot of trouble with it because I really wanted to have my own stuff that -I- personally had picked out, but after awhile I did get SOME of my own stuff and I just sort of stopped noticing the rest of it as much.

Ikea may have good prices on furniture, but their small accessories are generally overpriced.

I moved this past weekend to my new place. When I spoke to the movers about insurance, they asked if I had any furniture from IKEA.

I had to ask them why, and they replied that IKEA furniture is shitty and breaks too easy.

And besides, it's cheaper to replace than to pay the deductible on.

heh.

no, I have no furniture from IKEA... although I do love to go window shopping there.
