(CTD = Crash To Desktop)

I've been having random crashes to desktop on my brand spanking new EVGA 8800 GTS. This is with Oblivion plus Knights of the Nine plus Shivering Isles with all of the latest patches. My new rig is overclocked to the max but that shouldn't be a problem since it passed every single stress test I could throw at it.

Does anyone else have this card and this problem? I know there are a lot of Oblivion players here. This is with Windows XP Pro SP2 and the latest nVidia drivers released just yesterday.

Oblivion in 1920x1200 8xAA is fucking gorgeous. HDR is poo, 8xAA+Bloom is where it's at. I want to play it without it falling over every 5 bloody seconds though.

FYI, this is the only game that does it. Second Life and EVE both run like a charm.

I've had that sometimes, but beforehand I'd see my desktop mouse pointer at the upper left of my screen before it happens...

The main incompatabilities I've found with Obilvion are still various extra audio codecs.

Try going into the audio control panel, and disabling any codec you don't absoltely need. If you find one that you need sometimes for playing various movies, etc, you may have to do what I have to do, turn it off for Oblivion, then turn it back on afterwards for the files that need those codecs.

A pain, but it does give you a workaround.

Oblivion apparently put my RAM through stress no other program was able to, because I had the same issue of random crashes and STOP screens until I RMA'd my memory.

YMMV.

I've heard this too. Oblivion is VERY sensitive about its audio codecs.

I'll give that a whirl and see if it works.

Now it only crashes every 2 hours or so, which I can live with. After reading lots of forums it seems Oblivion is extremely sensitive to overclocks and hates the nVidia 8800 series, so I'm lucky it runs at all.

Still annoying but meh, I can live with 2 hour breaks.

That sounds like about what my current luck is. I have an nVidia 7800 myself. More and more, I've found problems with nVidias these days, especially when using them with dual core CPUs.

I'm seriously considering replacing my vid card with an ATI at this point (and I have been an nVidia fan ever since the days of original GeForce 1 and 2 cards) if they don't get their drivers more stable with more games.

The aging ATI X850 Platinum AGP that this nVidia replaced was a lot slower, but absolutely rock solid. I can't think of a single time that computer crashed in a game, not one. Seems like I traded performance for stability.

After switching out my RAM I've had zero problems with my 7800GTXs and dual core CPU. I also ran a plethora of mods.

qq more, etc etc

My RAM is fine. If it passes MemTest ran entirely overnight (9 hours) with zero errors, which it did, it'll pass any game.

Same with my RAM.

Also, there are a number of games that specifically list issues with recent nVidia cards and multi core Intel chips. They all say the problem lies with nVidia.

Again, I'd really LIKE to like nVidia again, but just lately, they've been annoying me with their drivers just not being 100% with Intel multi-core CPUs. (That being said, I haven't tried the May drivers yet. Will try em out and see if they make my game playing any more stable)

It's running fine now. I've become a hunter of monsters. Killed the Giant Slaughterfish, the Giant Mudcrab, and the huge unique Troll already. Looking for more uniques.

Going to cook up a large area effect frenzy spell and set it off in the Imperial City, while invisible. Teeheehee.

My favorite unique thing, the suicide troll. Beneath a bridge south east of the Imperial city, there's a troll corpse with a suicide note on him, in which he laments he was such a bad troll, he couldn't get anyone to pay his toll.

On the invisibilty front, "100% chameleion" on armour = god mode. You can attack almost anything without any reprisals, ever. (Except your infamly and bounty.)

The Duping bug in the unpatched version was fun. Poke a few things with a bow and arrow and have like fifty daedra hearts fall all over the floor.

Ok, was definately a codec problem.

I tried re-installing the K-Lite Codec Pack so I could watch some videos (porn) and after that Oblivion won't last five minutes before throwing a fit.
