I was thinking about this about a week ago. Everyone always has their own say about LOL BEST GAEM EVAR (believe me, i know this), but how can you really compare something like DDR to a game like World of Warcraft or Silent Hill or Madden 07? You really can't. After thinking about it, I decided it's not enough to just have one favorite game, but gamers have favorite games of every genre! Even if you're not a fan of the genre, you probably have at least one you played and enjoyed. So let's hear them. I'm also gonna include the "What's your favorite game for each system?" in this. Ok, the fun begins now.

What is Your Favorite Video Game in the ___ Genre?"

Action - Castlevania: Lament of Innocence - PS2

Adventure - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Wii

Platforming - Super Mario Bros. 3 - NES

Sports - Ice Hockey - NES

Non-traditional Sports - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 - PS2

Racing (yes, cart racers count) - Chocobo Racing - PSX

RPG (American style. Elder Scrolls, Fable, Diablo, etc) - Diablo 2 - PC

J-RPG (big swords, spiky hair, premade parties) Final Fantasy 7 - PSX

MMORPG - World of Warcraft - PC

Puzzle - Tetris - GB

Rhythm - Pop'n Music 11 - PS2 (import)

FPS - Unreal Tournament ('99) - PC

RTS - Command and Conquer - PC

Simulation - Animal Crossing: Wild World - DS

Graphic Adventure - Goosebumps: Escape From Horrorland - PC

Strategy (not real time. turn based or stuff like Rot3K) - Alpha Centauri - PC

Survival/Horror - Silent Hill 2 - PS2

Flight Sim (space or otherwise) - Descent 2 - PC

Fighting - Tekken 5 - PS2

If I left out your favorite genre, I am sorry. I'm nowhere near perfect. Moving on...

This one, don't think you have to put whatever you put for one of the above questions down here. There might be a platforming game on PS2 you think is the best PS2 game, but it's not your favorite platformer overall.

You're thinking, "Man, Gains makes these cool surveys but I just can't put forth the effort into doing them." Then along comes 4AM and you realize you're too stupid to go to bed, so my thread gets 30 replies. I love how EC works.

Have fun!

I'm leaving out the platforms I never played. I also decided to skip non-traditional sports, since I can't think of any I've ever played, and graphic adventure, because frankly I have no idea what you're getting at there.

EDIT! I mislabeled J-RPG as CRPG, which I normally call them (and which stands for cinematic role-playing game, a nice way of saying they have completely linear stories supported by lavish, cinematic cutscenes and CG work; you could probably wedge KotoR in there, but personally I think the storyline is just open enough to go in the other RPG category BUT ANYWAY).

EDIT 2! List amended to accomadate graphic adventure.

ACTION: Metal Gear Solid - PS

ADVENTURE: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES

PLATFORM: Donkey Kong Country - SNES

SPORTS: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - NES

RACING: Super Mario Kart - SNES

RPG: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - PC

J-RPG: Chrono Trigger - SNES

MMOG: World of WarCraft - PC

PUZZLE: Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo - PS

RHYTHM: PaRappa the Rapper (YEAH YOU HEARD ME) - PS

FPS: Half-Life: Opposing Force - PC

RTS: Homeworld - PC

SIM: SimCity - SNES (YEAH YOU HEARD ME)

[GRAPHIC ADVENTURE:[/B] Space Quest IV - PC

STRATEGY: Shogun: Total War* - PC

SURVIVAL HORROR: Silent Hill (ZOMBIE BABIES AHHHHHHHHHHH) - PS

FLIGHT SIM: I think it was called The Battle of Britain - PC

FIGHTING: Tie! Tekken Tag Tournament and Soul Calibur II - PS2 on both counts

DOS: Hell, I don't know. King's Quest IV: Rosella's Peril, I guess.

ATARI: Ghostbusters, I think it was called.

NES: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

SNES: Final Fantasy VI

NINTENDO 64 OH MY GAWD: Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

PS1: Laugh if you will, but I loved that stupid Warhawk game.

PS2: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

PC: Homeworld

GAME BOY: Tetris

ARCADE: Metal Slug somethingorother

* Shogun could technically fit in RTS as well, but I stand by my placement!

And now to see how poorly I handled the UBB code!

You should check out the action games that other ECers have mentioned. I know you can get Devil May Cry (don't get 2, but 1 and 3 are real good), Ratchet and Clank, God of War, and Jak for real cheap.

I've played God of War and MGS, neither of which I got too into. I'm reluctant to buy new systems, and also limited because of the vertigo thing mentioned above - just WATCHING people play Gears of War makes me really dizzy. The stories I've heard about Devil May Cry's difficulty put me off - I'm one of those losers who plays games for the storyline, experience and atmosphere rather than the challenge, and I get very frustrated if I die a lot. Still, I've been on an RPG run lately and could use the change (why did I buy Drakengard? oh right, I love dragons and tragedy) so Ratchet and Clank/Jak might be worth looking into .

Generally speaking I dislike just generic beating/shooting of people unless I'm ridiculously overpowered and can plow through thousands of guys. I like it when there are gimmicks or weird gameplay bits I can screw around with, and prefer the cartoony, fantastic and stylized over gritty realism (anything set in any real-life conflict gets an instant nay).

Lightning strike: I should get Prince of Persia! I haven't played ANY of those games yet, and given my general music/aesthetic taste I might actually be able to enjoy Warrior Within's nu-metalness!

Pick up something in the Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors franchises.
