Final Fantasy Tactics to be ported to PSP next year.

A great triumph for Sony.

Bout damn time a good Square RPG came to PSP.

It's like Square-Enix finally realized, almost ten years after the fact, that they've been re-hashing one of their worst games over and over again, while somehow ignoring one of the best games of an entire console generation.

My god... this has single-handedly done for the PSP what months of shitty advertising couldn't do. I'm actually kinda interested in one now.

Any idea if they're fixing the translation at all?

Yeah. Who cares about Metal Gear, Guilty Gear, GTA, Valkyrie Profile, Lumines(lol), Syphon Filter, and all those other shitty games.

Sucks that people shit all over the PSP in every thread.

You mean the games that, aside from GTA and Metal Gear, haven't had any advertising whatsoever?

For a system that is best known for a failed movie format and having its best use be to emulate SNES games?

Gosh, I wonder why it is that people shit all over the PSP whenever they talk about it...

So if they aren't advertised they suck. Gotcha.

And companies trying to sell UMDs for above DVD price only have themselves to blame.

Actually, it's more "If they aren't advertised then nobody in the world will know shit about them so it doesn't matter if they're good or they suck."

And yes, Sony is entirely to blame for the fiasco of UMDs and the PSP sucking.

And I'm glad nearly half a million gamers thought the PSP sucked enough to buy it last month. And nearly 100,000 every other month.Link.

And that PSP software sales have been just below Gamecube software sales.

It isn't the 400 pound juggernaut of the DS, but it is far from a piece of shit.

I enjoy my PSP. Far from nothing on it anymore. Mega Man games, lots of fighters, the GTA games obviously, RPG count is rising (slowly but surely), and for the import friendly, even more options are available. I can't bash a system with more rhythm games on it than it's competitor, after all.

This is all completely ignoring homebrew of course.

Fascinating that you equate the PSP to the Gamecube in terms of sales. As I recall, the Gamecube itself was in a similar situation through its best years, and a great many people couldn't help but insult it in much the same way. Hmmm.

Also, when you're one of only two options on the market, and you haven't even sold half as many units as your competitor... Most of the time, you are indeed shit.

Absolutely! I'm not saying it's impossible to enjoy the PSP. All that I'm saying is that from a marketing standpoint, there is a hell of a lot that Sony could have done better.

Will I buy a PSP? Probably not. Are there good games for the PSP? Absolutely. Has the PSP come anywhere near dethroning Nintendo's hold on the portable market? Hell no.

Did anyone actually think they would take out Nintendo in the portable market in one shot? Anyone that thought that is a moron. Shit, the DS outsells the PS2 which has been the gold standard for sales for years.

To hear Sony's early press releases... Yes. Yes they did.

That doesn't explain, however, how a more or less dead system like the GBA still beat out the PSP by a good 200k units.

Library sold 200k units. I guarantee it. Why? Because the DS doesn't play Pre-Advance games.

And the PSP is a very solid little system. I love mine. There are a lot of games that frankly should've been PSP primary releases, because they're really a lot better on the PSP than on other platforms.

For instance...Star Wars 2 Battlefront. It's rather identical to the other platforms in other ways, except I don't have to play split screen. The graphics are good, I can do flight/space missions as well as ground-pounder missions. Works for me!

Likewise, as far as I'm concerned, X-Men Legends2/Marvel Ultimate Alliance type games are better for a portable system if you in any way intend to play them multiplayer. Just more fun that way, really.

The biggest wound to the PSP was that Sony didn't aggressively back the UMD format. As a portable video media format it's great. I have the first season of Family Guy as UMD. Even without the backlight everything is nice and crisp and bright. Unfortunately, Sony didn't see the UMD format as something to sell PSP's, they saw PSP's as a way to make money off of the UMD format...So they forced companies to pay an extravagant amount to access the UMD format...which proceeded to promptly backfire horribly. Sony somehow didn't realize that their competition in portable video isn't Nintendo; it's people with laptops with sexy DVD-ROM drives that they can stick AVI's or whatever on. So not only did they get the proper money-making target completely backwards, they also completely missed out on the market they should've been wooing with the video. Sony has at this point more or less stopped UMD movie solicitations, and I think the official death date for new UMD format movies is January 2007. And if you're paying for the ability to watch movies/TV series on a device that will no longer have new movies/TV series, then you're paying too much for too little. Rather than kill UMD, Sony should have bitten the bullet and opened UMD up to everyone.

But that's one in a list of Sony's lousy recent marketplace moves. The PSP is an excellent system for what you get. But then...so was the Saturn.

No doubt, but I haven't been to the store to see if prices have jiggled down any since the last time I went in.

But like I insinuated...part of the reason a PSP's price is so high is that it was designed to be a higher end system capable of playing TV shows/movies. If you could somehow strip that feature without sacrificing the other niceties of the PSP, you might be able to knock down the cost some. Problem is that Sony's not going to do that.

Maverick Hunter X looks bad ass, and Powered Up is cool just because of create a level mode, and the massive amounts of characters you can play as.

Seriously. I could watch 2 full movies on my PSP and then play some music before the battery died. It was great.

I just haven't been using it as much since I got a job where I actually have to do shit instead of sitting on my ass all day. Picked up WTF today, so that should probably change things.

FFT would be a nice addition to my PSP library. It makes me happy to see, but it doesn't have me jumping for joy or anything.
