Right, I got the need to differentiate, I just would've thought they'd do it the other way around, with Ken getting the hadokens and Ryu getting the shoryukens.

Because whatever cabinet is rendering the sprite either lacks the capability, or the creators lack the talent, to make it display different sprites depending on the character's facing.
