hexen. for n64 specificallly

what a shitty game i mean seriously this is like Doom 1 if you took out the freaking guns

flying enemies? no problem! except i can't aim up or down

lets add REALLY DUMB PUZZLES AND HIDDEN ENTRANCES THAT YOU NEED TO FIND and a camera that swivels fast enough to cause instant migraines and you have a game fit for a king!

also you have a fucking mace and oooooh little noxious cloud vials that you can't actually throw at your enemies, but you have to set gingerly in front of you which allows them to explode right all over your own face

goddamnit i hate this game

If you have an old gaming system lying around, sooner or later you're gonna play it. I know I bust mine out for Mario 64 every now and then.

Yeah, that game wasn't so good.

What was that one weapon? The Chaos Ovum?

Yeah, that was a pretty fun item.

You're thinking of Heretic.

Unless the Ovum was in Hexen as well.

Technically not, it came out after Heretic yes, but don't forget they also released a 3rd person shooter named Heretic 2 and a Hexen 2, I'd say they're independent of one another.

Except that Id neither made the Hexen/Heretic games nor Doom 64, haha. I've played all the Hexen/Heretic games through and I'd have to agree that they're pretty annoying. Hexen is probably the worst of the series, and the best may be Heretic II. Hexen II was enjoyable sometimes. Heretic was just kinda funny.

HeXeN was alright. Multiplayer was really damn fun, mostly because of the Porkelator. That thing was awesome.

Some advice, if you're willing to play it some more:

1. Move around in combat. Circle-strafe enemies like there's no tomorrow.

2. The cleric is a bad, bad character.

The fighter is good for learning movement (fastest character in the game), he has loads of armour, and while his weapons are mostly geared towards close-range and melee, he deals shitloads of damage. His third and fourth weapons (Hammer of Retribution and Quietus, respectively) have ranged attacks, but these consume blue and green mana, both of which the fighter has very little. These weapons can, however, also be used in melee in case you run out of mana, but this doesn't deal as much damage as the ranged attacks.

The mage is also a good choice for a beginning character. He isn't as fast or tough as the fighter, and doesn't deal nearly as much damage with his first weapon, but all of his weapons are ranged. As well, the mage has lots of mana, so he can use his better weapons more than any other class. The beginning of the game takes some patience, though, as the staff does almost no damage per hit. Unlimited range, though.

The problem with the cleric is, they start you out with a melee weapon, and you're not even as strong, tough, or fast as the fighter. Later on, you find some good magic ranged weapons, but you don't have quite as much mana to spend on them as the mage. His fourth weapon, Wraithverge, is absolutely amazing, but living long enough to get the weapon is facking hard. The cleric is a beast in deathmatch, where you're likely to find all the pieces of Wraithverge really quickly on each stage, but otherwise, take one of the other two characters.

3. The Porkelator is amazing. Use it.

Yeah, I used to play HeXeN a lot.

The problem with Duke Nukem 3D, multiplayerwise, was that the explosive shotgun shells were horribly broken.

Storywise, yeah. Heretic, HeXeN, and HeXeN II dealed with the 3 Serpent Riders. Heretic II was just a continuation of Corvus' journey.

I remember when I was like...in 6th or 7th grade...me, Janus, my cousin and one of our other friends played 4P HeXeN and we though it was the bees knees.

The other friend threw up during it so we stopped playing though.

Good times.

Well, it works with the shareware version. Can't remember if the shareware version has all the game levels though. Not like it'd be hard to find DN3D on an "abandonware" site though most likely if you really wanted to do sp.

The fighter had the ultimate Deathmatch taunt. Get the Hammer of Retribution, almost kill someone with the thrown hammers, then chase them around. As soon as you get into melee range, punch them with the gauntlets. One or two shots should finish them.

Everyone hated when I did that.

Hexen 2 was much less terrible but still somewhat annoying. The fighter basically became the paladin, and the cleric became the crusader.
