Openly homosexual superheroes yes, pick up a Vertigo or Wildstorm book and you will see normal people who are actually allowed to be bi/homosexual or ugly.
Apollo and The Midnighter caused a huge shitstorm when they debuted back in 2000. I think Googling "homosexual superheroes" still gets a page and a half of Catholic websites shitting bricks about them.

The new Speedy is a former prostitute who tested positive for HIV. But again, while it was significant for an issue or two, as was her getting to a point where she could tell the Titans about her status, it isn't the defining point of the character. Mia (Speedy) was well established and very well liked since the start of the new Green Arrow run.
Northstar (Marvel's hero who was "outed" as being gay in the 90's) didn't matter because the character had very little defining history outside the group he was a member of, and because it was, simply put, a publicity stunt. Marvel wanted to claim the "first gay hero" badge, and dropped the ball horribly. Even when you see Northstar in the Ultimate universe, his big defining characteristic is that 1. he's gay and 2. he's gay and asked Colossus to the prom.
That's a real shame because in a lot of comic books the idea of sex being normal and more than just normal, but a positive aspect of a relationship (and in some cases the only thing TO a relationship) is one of those things that comic books are getting better about. I'm less concerned with what hero is gay or bisexual and more interested in the character themselves.
I happened to like Apollo and Midnighter. I thought it was an amusing parody of Superman and Batman on the surface, but once they started digging into the pair's history it was really good stuff. Plus the writer had the confidence in his own storytelling abilities to write them like he would write any secure, loving, happy couple. Even the dynamic in the group (calling them Poofs or other infantile effeminate-sounding "insults) was playful. I know that in my group of friends, if someone turned up gay we'd probably give them shit but that would be it.
I think that in a LOT of cases, the main studios for the big two (Marvel and DC) are stuck in the 90's, which is better than being stuck in some previous era, but won't make a dent at all in the present day. They've completely missed the fact that some of their writers (particularly the writers at Vertigo studios and the studio handling the Ultimates line, which is in a LOT of ways very modern and as realistic as possible given the subject matter) have managed to NOT get hung up over "the gay" and have jumped immediately to the next step.
Gimmick characters are ALWAYS bad, unless it's for a quick unimportant laugh. It's particularly bad when it draws undue attention to a group that's already being handled maturely elsewhere. Unfortunately, DC seems to be trying to ramp up interest in Batwoman, who I almost guarantee will be gone inside of two years (and only two years because DC will rub your nose in all the new stuff for a year now because they have to do all the "Infinite Crisis Aftermath" crap) due to lack of interest. A lesbian female version of Batman (she's rich! she dresses as a bat! I mean criminy at least Tim Drake's origin is about as different from Dick Grayson's as it gets) is just as lame as the Azrael "look at my big metal claws and shiny metal suit" Batman from when Bane busted Bruce's back, or the fact that the "Reign of the Supermen" storyline was actually quasi-serious (they really were testing the waters to see if people were at all interested in a new Superman; and they ended up giving us the electozap Superman a few years later anyway).

Pretty much. Y the Last Man has a lesbian as one of the three main characters. But it's a side story that's happening along the main plotline, so it fits in well.

Depends on who's working. Our one buddy thinks it's cool, but Lyinar is not only a girl, but an attractive girl. There's this creepy old chick who comes in to, in her words, "find the lucky dice" occasionally, but she's not into comics. If it's not our buddy, though, people stare and murmur.
