You really should get at least somewhat of an understanding of Marx if yelling "Marx! Marx! Marxism! Reds everywhere!" and hoping that the person you are talking to is a victim of cold war era indoctrination and will duck and cover under a blanket is your first line of defense in any argument.
Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

Why is it that an American liberal seems to be defined as a leftwing communist jerkoff, whereas a European liberal is pretty much a libertarian?

Edit: Also, Maradon, you seriously need to adjust your arguing style. I agree with a lot of what you say (because I know my stance on most of the issues you debate is similar to yours), but you're so bad at making your point that I often find myself irrationally disagreeing with you in my head. If your intention is to convince people and not waste your time, cut the aggression.

On the other hand, saying Marx has nothing to do with modern socialism is disingenuous.

When explaining the recent riots here, my grammar prof for the last term used catchphrases directly out of Marx, as did several leaders of major unions. Worse, though, was that no one else in the class recognized it. . .and I'm not sure the quote was intentional, either. Hell, "bourgeois" is still a typical isult, here, and they use "bobo" (short for "bourgeois bohème") like we use "yuppie" in the States.

So while Maradon often misses the boat in attributing everything to Marx. . .it's also not really fair to claim Marx's influence isn't still present, especially here in Europe.

It's not that Maradon invokes comparisons with Marx, it's that he invokes them as a complete blanket condemention of anyone to the economic left of Ayn Rand and that he takes it as given that anything in any way connected to Marx must be utterly terrible. You can pick out Marxist influence in particular instances, sure, but you'd still have to show why the position is false beyond pointing out that it may have been influenced by Marx.

I wish it were that benign. It's more like some people believe--without often even understanding the source of the economic catechisms they quote--the basic tenets of Marxism.

As Mod proves above, Marx is pretty much the starting assumption in an economic discussion here--anyone who wants to say anything different must first show why Mark doesn't work. The burden of proof is on anyone who contradicts Marx.

Edit: although, to be fair, there is a growing movement that recognizes the necessity to move toward freer markets in order to compete worldwide. But we saw how far even the hint of linking job security with job performance got, here at least. People expect to be given job security and economic prosperity, not to earn it as a result of their actions, with the inherent chance that they might not succeed, or not succeed as well as somebody else.

Not really, if I replied to your second paragraph with "That's textbook Rand" you'd still want me to show why this makes your argument false, this would not make Rand the starting assumption in any economic discussion.

You have a point.

I shouldn't overgeneralize, but here, at least, a lot of people still talk in phrases directly out of Marx, and many of his ideas are simply taken as given. It's frightening, in the 21st century.

Edit: for the record, I'm no more a Rayn fan than I am a Marx fan. Anarchy and total control are both bad, unworkable ideas.

Just tell them that they're making Marxism into a religion, and the government will pass a law banning it.

Interesting thought!

I was stunned when I read an interview with a student union* leader here, who took offense at the notion that the people breaking things and pillaging were a fringe element detracting from the demonstrations. She said that what the government did--passing a law giving employers more flexibility to hire and fire young people--was tantamount to violence against them, so it was therefore perfectly appropriate to respond with violence.

*Not the same kind of "student union" we have in the US; it's more like the AFL-CIO kind of union.
