Since I've just stumbled over the rude fact that HP--in a fit of pure, unadulterated evil--has region-coded their fucking print cartridges, I'm now paranoid as to what else shares that fate.

I assume console games, and thus consoles, are region-coded. So I must therefore mail-order my 360 games. Right?

Are PC games region-coded? You bastards are making me want Galactic Civ II.

I have a region-free DVD player, so I'm set there.

What else do I need to look out for?

AFAIK, PC games are not region coded.

At least none of the recent ones I've got were, anyway... (I know this because they were all shipped from EB Games USA to Aus).

360 games are a mixed bag. Keep tabs on this list to see what is region coded and what isn't. You may have to do a little additional checking in addition to that; usually importer sites (Liksang or Play-Asia) will mention it in the game descriptions. DS games are not region coded. PS2 and PSP games are all region coded I believe. If you have a NTSC console, it's probably best to import US releases, even though it'll be more costly.

PC games are not region coded, but there are often region specific. Usually, you'll see the least censorship in the US versions of the title. You're also less likely to see Starforce protection for US versions, but only a couple releases have region specific protection. MMORPGs are the exception to this, as the servers are often forced region specific. Again, my personal recommendation is that you import US releases when possible.

Well, it's more of an impatience thing than a cost thing, so I guess I'll just play it safe and mail-order stuff from US stores. Should only add about 10 days or so to delivery.

If you were that impatient, you'd just pirate the software.

Incorrect. UMD games and movies are region coded.

Why can Alaan and YOTC play their imported games (Bleach fighting game and Guilty Gear XX Reloaded JP) just fine on their US PSPs then?

All my UMD cases have region-coding stickers on them. They're region-coded, it just isn't as stupidly and violently enforced as DVD movies.

Movies are region locked. Games are not region locked for SP, but they are region locked for MP. So the games are region coded and partially region locked, but they're not fully region locked as of yet. That could change in the future based on the decisions of individual developers.

Buy the region locked version, then pirate a version you can use.

Sure, it's technically illegal, but regioning is technically an illegal restriction of trade, so it evens out.

Regioning is not illegal, pretty much by definition. You really need to quit imagining that any time the world doesn't work the way you think it should, someone is violating some fundamental law of the universe.

I'm not, and I've never done anything remotely like that.

Regioning isn't a law, it's a collaborative "trick" of the industry that they use to restrict trade and control who is allowed to buy what and when they can buy it. It's a violation of property rights and, technically, illegal.

Yes, you're right! That's why it's been challenged and overturned by the courts, since it's obviously and patently an illegal trick by certain industries to--gasp!--control markets.

Jeebus, where do you come up with this stuff?
