Topic: Removing Garfield's thoughts makes the comic funny? (image heavy-ish)

Here and here is where it started.

Take away Garfield's "witty" remarks, and all you have left is the surreal, sad story of a lonely man whose only form of communication is with a cat. A cringe-worthy comic becomes at least a chuckle-worthy one.

Removing Garfield entirely can have some pretty fun results as well.

There's even been some small attempts to make Mallard Fillmore funny as well.

Problem is Garfield hasn't broken any new ground in years. Hence the fact I don't seek out collections of it like I do Fox Trot. I think the dude who did Outland/Bloom County/Opus got it best when he postulated that the best thing a daily strip writer can do is know when they have nothing and take a break. I think Jim Davis still has the funny in him. I think he's just running low on mojo.

I LOL'ed at them, that's enough to give this thread a golden 5.

I've always liked Garfield. Even when he's not around.

Yeah one-off jokes are replacing everything else. Be like when they wrote out Lyman because they thought he made Jon seem too gay.

Heathen. Back in it's prime, it was easily one of the top Sunday comics. I would say second to only Calvin and Hobbes.

You dare to say Garfield is better than The Far Side?

Eh. The Far Side is pretty funny, but yeah I used to prefer Garfield a bit more.

I have to agree that Garfield was certainly much funnier and more original back then.

Oh, and in case you didn't check out any of the boards I posted links to, be sure to check out this series of comics that happened between October 23-28 1989. Somewhat of a mindfuck, especially considering it's coming from a comic such as Garfield.

I was born in 1984, Didnt read comics till I was 13. Therefore I can safely say that I have never seen a funny garfield strip previous to this thread. Just before my time. Loved the cartoon series though.

And that Loneliness series is some creepy wacked out shit.
