I did a quick search and didn't find anything, so I thought I'd ask a question to see if anyone might be more 'in the know' than me. I've been reading through the archives of Sluggy Freelance. I'm up to like 2002, I think, from 1997. There's a goddamn lot of archives for this comic but I'm really enjoying it.

Anyway, to the question. Last week on Tuesday, I saved my place with a bookmark, as I only read some when I have free time at work, and went home. When I came back to work on Wednesday, all I could get was errors saying the page could not be found. I wasn't too worried since they'd been down for most of a day about a week earlier due to server problems. Only now it's been effectively a week and it's still down.

Does anyone know if the site has changed or if it's down for good or, well, any news at all? I feel like I've turned off a movie halfway.

I don't read it, but I just checked - site works for me, and there's comics for all the days it's been "down" for you.

I think it's just you/your ISP.

Sluggy's been working fine. It's possible your employer has started restricting web access. My brother can only get at news/newspaper sites and pre-approved work-related sites from his office. Though if they were tightening the noose, you might have trouble getting to EC as well.

It could be an ISP issue like Za said, or perhaps the archive layout has changed. When you go to the home site, is today's comic down for you?

Sluggy appears to be up and running fine for me.

What I'd suggest, is to check the properties of the bookmark and post the URL that you're having problems accessing here. I think they may have changed the format of the archives, and if so, then the bookmark may link to a page that's no longer valid.

Without actually knowing what the URL is, however, I couldn't say for sure.

If I type in www.sluggy.com and hit enter, I get the same thing. And I find it odd that it would suddenly get blocked. I mean, I can go to porn sites if I wanted to and they're not blocked. And since I'm in IT and friends with the guys on serverside, I know it's not blocked. I can't even ping the hostname.
Never had a problem with any of the other comics I check daily either. Grr.

Okay this is weird and I don't like it

Try a tracert, that might tell you where it's failing.

Well, so much for the bad bookmark theory

I tried pinging, no problems here. Downed router in TX, perhaps? Maybe someone overreacted about Rita or something? What's the tracert say?

Everyone overreacted about Rita around here

The tracert gets 3 hops on the internal network and dies, so I'm sure it's a Schlumberger issue, then. I'll assume it's something to do with Rita (they did move a lot of servers and communications equipment to Arlington in preperation for the hurricane). I'll give it another week or so before I whine about it to the guys on the server team.

Oi, that really sucks. The most recent storyline (Oceans unmoving) is shaping up really nice, too. You need to read a whole lot just to understand WTF is going on in that comic though. D:

Hope it's fixed soon.

I gave up with the Kitten story arc.

Hmm. I think that was before "Game called on account of Naked Chick".

And the Torg Potter parodies.

I read those after a few years... then dropped it again because of Kitten2.

Sluggy works fine for me, though frankly I think Pete's phoning it in these days. The third "Torg Potter" story was almost pointlessly late (and seemed forced), the "Oceans Unmoving" storyline, while mildly amusing (I like the greys named after the A-Team), lacks the charm of the old stuff. Ever since the story where Torg was with alternate-Zoe and she got ganked, it's kinda gone downhill. Where there was a lot of silly, good-natured, fun humor involved, now there's this undertone of ANGST whenever Torg is put around certain characters (specifically Zoe). The Dimension of Pain/alternate happy world story was frankly far too long and resulted in all this mess and frankly should be left out.

I've only ever seen one Sluggy strip; that being the one involving the SuccuBus.
