Anywhere within 150 miles of New Orleans, really. Or, if they do, I hope that said relatives have headed due north with great haste.

I'm really glad I went there over spring break this year. It's sounding like the French Quarter is going to get demolished, which is a shame. :/ I've had some of the best meals of my entire life there, as well as seen some of the coolest looking old buildings.

Hopefully everyone's evacuating, but if they aren't, best of luck to them.

I went to a governor's program within an hour of New Orleans. I even visited Tulane college while I was there. I have a lot of friends in the area and they're all evacuating.

You reminded me of this song..

When The Levee Breaks
(Bonham/Jones/Page/Plant/Memphis Minnie)

If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break, (X2)
When The Levee Breaks I'll have no place to stay.

Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan, (X2)
Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home,
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well.

Don't it make you feel bad
When you're tryin' to find your way home,
You don't know which way to go?
If you're goin' down South
They go no work to do,
If you don't know about Chicago.

Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move.

All last night sat on the levee and moaned, (X2)
Thinkin' about me baby and my happy home.

Going, going to Chicago... Going to Chicago... Sorry but I can't take you...
Going down... going down now... going down....

Curious: You ever been in/near an area when a hurricane hits?

People generally aren't able to take pets to shelters. People are told to cage the pets up before a major storm, also, if I remember right, so the pets can't get free after the storm and get themselves killed.

If they're caged with food and water, they stand a better chance of surviving then if they were just left running around.

I'm sorry, but if I had to make a choice between saving myself by going to a shelter or staying home with my pet and endangering myself...the pet stays.

It sucks, but humans > pets.

ok, my last post was not a serious one, but I do remember seeing an organization that would charge people who left their pets behind - so, instead of having them possibly die because they couldn't escape, why not let them loose to see if they can save themselves?

isn't it that when bad weather is coming, animals are the first to respond/flee?

Beau, no offense, but you really have no fucking clue what you are talking about.

I used to live 15 minutes away from Galveston, which is an island off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, where incidentally this hurricane is, and even I don't claim to know as much about hurricanes and emergency situations involving them as I probably should be able to.

For the years I was in Florida the standing recommendation was - should you have to leave your pets - you lock them indoors in the same room you'd seek shelter in if you couldn't get out in time, with plenty of food, water, and blankets.

But Beau's just some dumbass Canadian.

One of the reporters on CNN just said that they moved inside into their hotel because the winds were so heavy. He said that even though some doors and windows are open, the pressure in the building feels like the building wants to pull up out of hte ground.

Also, one of the guests in the hotel had her finger slammed in a door that closed by iteslf and it cut her finger in half. Since the police and ambulances aren't responding to any emergency calls right now, they can really do nothing for her.
