Only an idiot wants to get in melee range with a zombie to begin with. WWII style rifle is best; nice and accurate, good range, etc. But if you want a melee weapon, use a trench spike. Why? Because it's meant for one-handed use in close combat (so you can defend with something wrapped around your other arm while you make the brainstabbies)
