I just finished it. Definitely not the lighthearted kiddie book that the first was.

Anyone else done with it yet? What are your thoughts?

Shall I spoil the entire book by saying 3 words in spoiler code?

I think someone sat down at 12:01am and just flipped through chapter ends to find the huge spoiler, then threw it on every message board and website they possibly could.

The next one's the last, right?

Dumbledore's dead, right? If so, did Snape really kill him?

Holy shit. I just finished the book. I am really at a loss for words. I just pray that the movies continue to do the books justice. I fear that they will have problems as the series matures.

And they replaced him in the third movie. The guy did well.

As for deaths, Cedric died in Goblet, Sirius in Order and now Dumbledore in Prince

Excellent book. Good setup for the finale. But that's going to be hard to bring to film.

I'm really interested to see how they start doing the more advanced magic. They ROYALLY fucked up with the Patronus (It's not a shield, it's a conjured animal of happiness or whatever), and if they fubar the Avada Kedavra curse.. well...

Technically it is a shield. It drives back the dementors.

The first ones he tried were shields, but the way she describes how they were conjured (Look specifically when Tonks does it in Prince), it's a silver animal leaping out of the tip of the wand.

It's only like that if it's a really strong Patronous. Otherwise it's just a shield.

Ah, but the O.W.L. examiner at the end of Phoenix said "Can you conjure a Patronus?" not "Can you cast a Patronus?". Hence my "It's a f'n animal god damnit" thing.
Edit: Even Wikipedia agrees with me!

It's always an animal if it's a stong Patronus, but its purpose for Harry was as a shield against the dementors.

Tonks conjured one to have it run past and be seen so people wouldn't worry, but the specific purpose is as a shield and protection.
