I'm on a kick about learning historical facts. In this thread, we share a historical fact that may be well-known or little-known.

Someone tell Bloodsage to post on this because he knows a lot about it.

Anyways, here's mine...

The Rape of Nanking in 1937 (I think) was a six-week slaughter and barbaric pillage. The Chinese forces of Nanking laid down their arms to the invading Japanese army. What followed was a mass execution of the younger men, mass rape of the women, looting, pillaging and massive slaughter.

In addition, the Japanese officers often held killing contests in which they murdered citizenry en masse to see who could kill the fastest. Pregnant women were sliced open and many women were sexually mutilated.

But a little known fact is the commander at the time, General Matsui, explicitly forbade his troops from doing such things. He gave a message to his subordinate to be delivered to the acting commander (Matsui was ill with tuberculosis) that said that the Chinese were to be treated fairly and that all looters, rapists and pillagers would be punished severely.

The subordinate, however, was violently anti-Chinese and had bought into the current mindset at the time (the Japanese believed themselves to be a master race, destined to conquer all others) and altered the orders mid-way to say "EXECUTE ALL PRISONERS OF WAR."

Bizarre!

I recently dug out my old notebook from a World History class, I'll give out random stuff from that.

From World War one and two, France lost so many men in the fighting it unbalanced their normal Men-to-Women ratio. It continued to be unbalanced until 1980. The policy for joining the military in France during WW1 was to accept only men past a certain height and build, believing larger men could be more effective in war. The result from all the casualties from WW1 was that the average population became thinner and shorter en masse afterwards.

Airplanes were first used as a weapon in WW1, originally being used to fly along trenches and drop rocks onto the enemies below. (I'm not kidding, rocks.) Afterwards pilots began taking pistols to use in dogfights with other planes, which eventually were upgraded to machine guns and bombs.

The tank was invented for WW1, which helped break through German lines by crashing a way through their barbed wire and into their trenches. German engineers were brought out to view the Allied tank, and within six weeks had developed their own version and were rolling them out of factories.

During the war, Australia found itself fighting the Turks who had allied with Germany. Trench warfare had been used to dig in both forces for days of fighting against an almost equal amount of troops. A plan was devised to have another country's artillery hit the Turkish troops just before the Aussies charged forward in three equal waves of assaults. The artillery rounds were mis-fired, landing several hundred yards past the Turkish trenches. Communications not being what they are today, the Australian troops saw the rounds overshoot their target, and charged forward anyway when given the command. The first wave was cut down, along with the second from machine gun fire of the Turks. When the third charge's troops were preparing to charge, their officers ordered them to empty their magazines and leave the ammo back with the few remaining defenders. The troops then charged onto the field without ammunition and were killed.

In World War Two, Hitler controlled a superior air force while attacking the British. In a desperate attempt to stall the Germans, England tried to bomb airplane factories in Germany, but hit civilian areas instead. Destroying German homes infuriated Hitler into ordering his bombers to fire on civilian targets in England instead of the military ones previously targetted. This break allowed England to produce more planes, and gain a foothold in the fight for the air. The Americans had by that time developed the P-51 Mustang, a superior fighter plane to what most countries had been using, after only seven days of development. After completing them, The U.S. began selling them to England.

During this time, the Nazi's had developed a firebomb made of Phosphorous and T.N.T. which proved effective in setting English civilian areas on fire. Teams of volunteers in England were organized to help put out those fires as soon as they landed. Often times these squads were fast enough to put out the fire before the T.N.T. inside could explode and spread the fire further.

Hitler's civilian bombing campaign became focused on St. Paul's Cathedral, hoping to destroy it along with the morale of the English. When the night fell however, many British civilians had gathered onto the roof of the cathedral and helped put out the hundreds of firebombs that dropped onto it.

There was a huge mess a short time ago when Japanese text books started referring to the Rape of Nanking as a "Minor Incident"

The Chinese were rightfully pissed off.

Also look up the Firebombing of Dresden. It was the single worst conventional bombing in history.

Here is a little snippet of how bad it was.

quote:
Out of 28,410 houses in the inner city of Dresden, 24,866 were destroyed. An area of 15 square kilometers was totally destroyed, among that: 14,000 homes, 72 schools, 22 hospitals, 19 churches, 5 theaters, 50 bank and insurance companies, 31 department stores, 31 large hotels, 62 administration buildings as well as factories such as the Ihagee camera works. In total there were 222,000 apartments in the city. 75,000 of them were totally destroyed, 11,000 severely damaged, 7,000 damaged, 81,000 slightly damaged. The city was around 300 square kilometres in area in those days. Although the main railway station was destroyed completely, the railway was working again within a few days.

The precise number of dead is difficult to ascertain and is not known. Estimates are made difficult by the fact that the city and surrounding suburbs which had a population of 642,000 in 1939[17] was crowded at that time with up to 200,000 refugees[18], and some thousands of wounded soldiers. The fate of some of the refugees is not known as they may have been killed and incinerated beyond recognition in the fire-storm, or they may have left Dresden for other places without informing the authorities. Earlier reputable estimates varied from 25,000 to more than 60,000, but historians now view around 25,000-35,000 as the likely range[19][20] with the latest (1994) research by the Dresden historian Friedrich Reichert pointing toward the lower part of this range[21]. It would appear from such estimates that the casualties suffered in the Dresden bombings were not disproportionate to those suffered by other German cities which were subject to fire raids during area attacks[22].

Contemporary official German records give a number of 21,271 registered burials, including 6,865 who were cremated on the Altmarkt.[23] There were around 25,000 officially buried dead by March 22, 1945, war related or not, according to official German report Tagesbefehl (Order of the Day) no. 47 ("TB47"). There was no registration of burials between May and September 1945.[24] War-related dead found in later years, from October 1945 to September 1957, are given as 1,557; from May 1945 until 1966, 1,858 bodies were recovered. None were found during the period 1990-1994, even though there was a lot of construction and excavation during that period. The number of people registered with the authorities as missing was 35,000; around 10,000 of those were later found to be alive.[25] In recent years, the estimates have become a little higher in Germany and lower in Britain; earlier it was the opposite.

There have been higher estimates for the number of dead, ranging as high as 300,000. They are from disputed and unreliable sources, such as the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda headed by Joseph Goebbels, Soviet historians, and David Irving, the once popular, but now discredited self-taught historian who retracted his higher estimates[26]. Both the Columbia Encyclopedia and Encarta Encyclopedia list the number as "from 35,000 to more than 135,000 dead", the higher figure of which is in line with Irving's retracted "authoritative" higher estimates.

If you are talking about the single worst bombing raid, it goes to the firebombing of Tokyo. Over 100,000 were killed it one raid.

Given the uncertenty in the numbers it may or may not have killed more people than the Atomic Bombs.

Most Historians agree that the dropping of the atomic bomb was the most humane way to end the war.

It was predicted that the Japanese, suffering from years of economic depression, righteously indignant from being figuratively "violated" years ago (by commander Perry's strongarm trade invasion), and wavering under the delusion that they were the master race of Asia, would hold out for years under an extended siege, taking an immense toll on troops and citizenry alike as every inch of ground was paid for.

The predicted death toll for an alternative forcing of surrender of Japan was monumental in comparison to the casualties of dropping the bomb.

Even the most conservative estimates put the expected death toll at around 1.5 million Friendly troops in the case of an invasion. The higher numbers were 5 times this. Japanese Civilian casualties would have been almost beyond comprehension.

I will tell you about the Seeadler.

The Seeadler was built in 1878 and christened The Pass of Balmaha. She was a steel, three masted, square rigged Bark.

In 1915 The Pass of Balmaha was seized by the german navy and was outfitted with a diesel motor and deck guns. The plan was to run the English blockade and break out into the Atlantic. In order to do this the ship would have to be disguised and the crew would pose as Norwegians, some logbooks were faked and conveniently sea stained as if the Seeadler had just come in from a stormy sea. The crew learned to chew tobacco and speak Norwegian. The guns were cleverly disguised by stacking a "load" of lumber around them, the lumber could be lowered and raised to redisguise the ship. She was rechristened the "Seeadler," but sailed under the Norwegian flag as the "Hero," with Captain Felix Von Luckner commanding.

The ruse was successful and the Seeadler passed an inspection by British officers and was sent on her way. She made her way across the Atlantic capturing and sinking merchant ships as she went along. Luckner would board the merchant ships and capture their crew, then scuttle the ship. Her route would take her around Cape Horn and toward Australia. Nearing South America her supplies were running low, and her prisoners' quarters were nearly full. It could often take months to make it around Cape Horn, so Captain Luckner decided to put his crew to the test once more. They headed for Rio De Janiero, disguised again as the "Hero," to purchase supplies. The prisoners were put aboard yet another captured ship to make their own way to Rio. The topmasts were cut to slow them down and ensure that the Seeadler would make it there first.

After Leaving Rio the Seeadler navigated around the horn and began raiding ships in the Pacific. On July 31st 1917 she anchored at Mopelia, French Society Islands. Unbeknownst to Captain Luckner she had begun to drag her anchor and two days later she went aground on a coral reef and was destroyed. Captain Luckner and five others set out to find another ship to capture and continue their raids. The prisoners were marooned on Mopelia and were later rescued. The German crew succeeded in capturing another ship and named it "Fortuna." Captain Luckner and his crew were eventually captured near Fiji and spent the remainder of the war in an internment camp.

During it's time at sea Luckner and the Seeadler managed to capture and sink 16 allied ships totalling over 30,000 tons without a single allied death.

Here's some neat facts about the Marquis de Sade:

He was a French aristocrat who is hailed as one of the first notorious sexual deviants. The term sadism as a love of pain is derived from him.

After his discharge from the French army after the Seven Years War, he married a young lady. However, his sexual appetite wasn't satiated by his wife and he frequently recieved prostitutes in his house and carried out more than a few affairs.

His lust first blossomed into criminal activity and was brought to light when he abducted a young lady and held her captive as a sexual slave. Throughout the years, de Sade would evade capture and arrest either through political means or just regular fleeing. During these times, he frequently had orgies in his home and at one point hired his own personal harem of sex slaves.

He was finally arrested and imprisoned after his mother-in-law's schemes finally cornered him. He was imprisoned in the Bastille and later imprisoned in an insane asylum after he tried to incite a mob from his window. To overcome boredom, he penned several graphically erotic novels and plays in his cell.

He was later freed during the early stages of the French Revolution and lived the rest of his life unmolested, continuing his sexual acts until his death. Afterwards, his eldest son burned his plays and novels and his grave was later desecrated when a phrenologist exhumed his skull for research.

Late night trivia!

"Tsujigiri" is a Japanese term coined by Samurai that means "to test out a sword on a chance passerby." It came to be known when Samurai did just that.

"Vagina" was a Roman word for a sword's sheath and "gladius" was slang or a pet-name for a man's penis, much like today's terms of "dong," "dick," "cock," or "click-stick."

His "subordinate" was none other than Prince Asaka, who yes, was very anti-chinese and very nationalistic. And do not think that Matsui was so noble as he also participated in timed contests with said Prince in order to see who could behead the most captured Chinese civilians. Matsui did not reprimand anyone for their actions later on for whatever reason. He was less evil than the rest of the Japanese army under his control but standing by and letting something happen is not proof of his character either.

Make sure you check your sources on that because Japanese history on WWII denies things like the Bataan Death March as well as any involvement in Nanking.

Also, today alot of Japanese politicians honor their convicted war criminals from the Rape of Nanking as heroes.

The first one is more like "My girlfriend didn't get enough." The implication being that she didn't get enough of your throbbing cock, of course, thus makinig you late.

The second one is like "Is that all it can do?" because in German, "koennen" sometimes doesn't need a helper verb. For example, "Kannst du Deutsch?" means "Can you speak German?" A literal translation of the English, however, would be "Kannst du Deutsch sprechen?" But no German ever says that, except when making fun of a non-native speaker.
