Just do it.

If it exists in your area, it's well worth it, especially on a large screen. The difference is stunning, especially with programming created for HD.

Now Comcast needs to get its ass in gear and add more channels!

Edit: just fuck UBB!

Didn't think Tube-style TVs had burn in issues unless you used them extensively to display the same thing (like with CRT monitors). Is this an issue with this particular TV? All of the tube TVs I've never owned have had burn in issues.

The dedicated HD channels like INHD are simply amazing. Even the normal channels look much better in HD. The only drawback is that Fox and a couple of others force a 4:3 resolution on their HD broadcasts for some reason, and although my projector automatically expands normal 4:3 pictures it won't for those.

So I have to watch The Simpsons with annoying grey bars on the side.

I wasn't sure, I just know a few people who got good deals on HDTVs only to find out that they were particularly vulnerable to it. I don't know for your model, but you should check it out. If applicable, just be very careful. Accidently leaving your TV on the Halo 2 intro screen, for example, will lead to a permenant Halo 2 logo on your nice television.

AFAIK, a CRT shouldn't have burn-in problems. Plasma screens are particularly susceptible to it, though, as are some rear-projection systems.

Yeah, if I do that, I'll get the digital set top box up at school so I can get HDTV instead of staying with what I have now.

I'm pretty sure you can fix that. I know I've watched 24 a bajillion times on HD and it uses the entire screen. Also, you're about a year late to the scene

Edit: Although now that I think about it, it may be your cable provider. For example, there are 2 NBCs that I get, one that is in regular HD format, and another that forces the 4:3 aspect ratio. *shrugs* I have Brighthouse.

You're thinking about plasma, which is extremely vulnerable to burn-in.

Even if it doesn't burn-in, pixels usually start to die after just a couple years, and in many cases they'll come brand new with burnt out pixels in them. It's so common that Best Buy even has a posted policy that they will not replace a brand new plasma TV for burnt out pixels unless there's more than 5 in a row.

Not bad for an $8,000 investment, eh?

CRT tubes are susceptable to screen burn, though not nearly as much as plasma screens. To burn a CRT you need a bright static image and a lot of time. Prime examples would be arcade monitors, or arrival/departure displays in airports. Televisons left on channels with a news ticker at the bottom will show screen burn as well.

With a plasma display, there are ways to remove screen burn. Removing the burn isn't what happens though, the rest of the display is burned to balance out the damage.

It's rather inconvient at the moment actually DirectTV dosn't have all local channels broadcasted in HDTV yet so you get to watch NY local HD stations. Granted, they are putting addtional satilites in the air shortly to give most major markets local HDTV but it is a thorn in the side for now.

There are still a ton more sattelite HD channels than cable.

There's even an all-HD sattelite provider called Zoom (I think) that has 80+ channels.

Cathy and I got lucky enough to get a 32 inch RCA HDTV that had been a display model at Walmart. The damn thing only cost 350. No remote or paperwork, but RCA replaced those for free.
Sage, the others are right. If you have an HDTV, you need to get DirecTV. They have the best HD package around. And I know they are leaps and bounds above most local cable companies in just about every way.

It's weird to hear you guys say that about cable vs satellite. For instance, with the cable Lyinar and I have now, I know that pretty much every channel between 150ish and 210ish are HD channels. That's around 60 HD channels. Given that I only watch, say, 4 or 5 channels regularly, and all of them but one (G4) rebroadcast in HD, I'd say that sticking with what we have would be a better deal.

I'd mainly want HD for movie channels anyway.

Satellite has a couple of advantages right now. First and foremost is that all channels are Digital. With current cable service(at least around here) only some channels are. Even with a Digital Cable box, a lot of them are still coming through at a much lower quality.

DTV has about 50% more digital channels than insight does around here and a few more than Dish Network.

Eat some real food instead

Seriously, pick up one of those huge, store-brand boxes of rice. It may cost more upfront, but it will fill you better and last longer - at least it did for me. If you feel like splurging (and have access to a freezer) get big bags of cheap vegetables (corn, peas, carrot slices, etc) to mix into your rice. Use salt, soy sauce, butter, garlic salt, etc for flavoring.

Or do what a friend of mine does. Make a big bowl of rice, and then top it with a package of ramen.

Your receiver has as much to do with the picture quality as the service does when it comes to Satellite TV. You can get a cheap 30 dollar receiver and have ok quality or you can get a much nicer one for a bit more money and have great quality. I noticed a big difference when I switched from my Hughes TiVo to my RCA Tivo.

I want to get an HDTV Tivo unit but they run around 600-700 bucks.
