How do you solo without having to drink after every fight? It gets annoying. Is there some part of conserving mana I don't understand? I've seen mages rip straight through multiple mobs (at the same time) that are only a level or so under them. I can only do one at a time. What am I doing wrong here?

(Note, priests may be able to answer this as well, since their main way of doing damage is through spells also.)

I really want to get my mage up in levels, but it's just so boring to play him due to all of the downtime. :/

As a Holy spec Priest I win fights less by doing damage and more by simply out surviving things. The fact that things my own level can only rarely overcome my HoT means that i don't really have to spend a huge amount of mana to win a fight. I just keep SW: Pain and Regen up at all times and melee things down while occasionally throwing in a Mind Blast mid-fight if the enemy has been getting in a lot of crits/special attacks. The prime reason for doing this rather than blasting with spells is mostly for mana conservation since i can't summon my own water like can and i either spend 40 seconds from landing Holy Fire and the first Mind Blast or kill something faster and then spend 40 seconds regening mana.

This is the long way of saying that you shouldn't ask a priest for advice on solo'ing as a mage

I didn't specificly ask for advice from a priest, I simply said that a priest MAY be able to answer the question too, as spells are their main way of doing damage.

I don't know how a mage can kill muliple mobs at the same time, but here's the most efficient way I've found to solo at level 33:

Frostbolt 5           132 Damage  100 Mana  #Pull and slow
Arcane Missiles 4     415 Damage  320 Mana  #While it's running to you
Fire Blast 4          168 Damage  165 Mana  #instant while youre getting&nb sp;hit
Frost Nova 2           33 Damage   85 Mana  #Root then jump out&n bsp;of melee range
Arcane Missiles 4     415 Damage  320 Mana
Fire Blast 4          168 Damage  165 Mana

Total                1331 Damage 1155 Mana

That's enough to kill ordinary level 31-32 mobs, though sometimes I'll have to finish off with a scorch or two. With 100 spirit it seems to take about a minute to get the mana back, which is usually how long it takes to find another raptor.

I haven't watched other mages solo, so maybe everybody does some version of this. I imagine that for multiples you could take advantage of your aoe spells, but without a better crowd-control solution (anybody?) I think that would be a good way to be beaten to death.

Why aren't you using Frostbolt 5 over Fire Blast 4? From the raw numbers it seems like it's more mana efficient and has a slow effect.

And is your Spirit +number 100 or is that the raw stat? Cause if the non-HP/MP modifying stats work like Sta and Int do, the raw stat number doesn't affect your regen. Unless that's been fixed.

He clearly states that the first time that he uses it, it's for while he's moving and getting hit. Fire Blast 4 is instant cast according to his little chart.

I think it's obvious.

Well, your drinks are also pretty advanced. With my Mage, it took maybe three seconds of downtime to drink.

& nbsp is the HTML escape sequence for a space.

Aside from that, I pretty much do the same sequence as Iulius - Frostbolt, Arcane Missiles, Fireball, Fire Blast, and use wand until crisp. Then again, I'm also only 13 on my mage

Mage fights go quicker then other peoples fights so we get to pay for it with horrid downtime. The best you can do is get evocate and clearcasting. You need to put 15 points into arcane for AE anyways so it isn't that bad to get evocate considering how good it is.

One trick that I found is mana shield+evocate is really effective if you've been having a bad run on resists and are oom and low on health. Just throw up the shield and go through evocation. You normally end up getting about half mana back if you have a decent spirit.

Why do you care about downtime as a mage, or blowing through mana? You summon your own drink.

I'd just like to say that at Lv.33 I've yet to have any downtime on my hunter nor have I found it necessary to consume food or drink.

I use fireball, scorch and fire blast mostly. I usally open with a fireball, then use 2-3 scorches and a fireblast. By then the mob is next to me and I frost nova it and walk back a bit. A few more scorches and some fireblasts if needed and the mob is dead.

If I get clearcasting I use arcane missles and I usually only use fireblast if I need to kill the mob extra quick(like if I'm almost dead).

I can kill 3-4 mobs before needing to drink, depending on clearcasting luck.

However, I've found mages to be much, much, MUCH, more annoying to fight in PvP. With hunters, you just have a warrior charge it (plenty of em on the Horde side) and watch it go squish. That doesn't work against a mage. If you try that on a mage, you'll get frost nova'd and possibly polymorphed. Then the barrage of nukes begin.

Here's how I do it at L.20, I can go for 3-4 straight at -1 level, or 2 even con, i'm a primarly fire spec'd mage.

Fireball to pull, drop another, then blast, nova, back up, then fireball again go in w/ staff to finish up.

Most of what I wanted to say has already been said. So I just add my personal experiences.

I'm a frost mage, except for fireblast and fireshield I'm not even buying firespells anymore. That said, I'm capable to beat 4, 5 or more MOBs around my level in a a row without drinking. IF I get SINGLES that is. The talents that help me doing this are he one that reduces the mana- cost of my ice spells, the one that improves the crits of my ice spells and the one that improves my crit chance by 50% on frozen targets. I get crits so often, it isn't funny. Wait... it is!

The key to my tactic is obviously frost nova. Without it I have severe problems.

If I get two MOBs, I go through almost my whole mana bar. Unless I use Frost Snap. Or sheep the add. If I get three, I usually run.

Well, that was a whole lot of nothing, but I thought I share it anyway.

About this: What is considered a "frozen" target?

"He lets the last Hungarian go, and he goes running. He waits until his wife and kids are in the ground and he goes after the rest of the mob. He kills their kids, he kills their wives, he kills their parents and their parents' friends. He burns down the houses they grew up in and the stores they work in, he kills people that owe them money. And like that he was gone. Underground. No one has ever seen him again. He becomes a myth, a spook story that criminals tell their kids at night. 'If you rat on your pop, Keyser Soze will get you.' And nobody really ever believes." - Roger 'Verbal' Kint, The Usual Suspects

A shame, I was hoping it meant "chilled".

Are the only ways to produce this effect Frost Nova and the Frostbite Talent? If so, it makes the Shatter Talent less than the overpowered monster I thought it might have been.
