I tried, but couldn't get the layers to merge properly?

Just follow the directions exactly word for word. He will have you switch the layer blend mode before every merge, and if you do not you will mess it up.

I started on my own sphere but then realized I don't have Adobe Photoshop 7.2340 or whatever the latest version is. I have 5.0.2

well you can play around with other blends on layer modes- The basic instructions should still apply.

No, I mean I couldn't find the button or menu to merge them. And when it did, it didn't merge right or something.

that part is just to add some shapes in the center. You could do the same thing with a brush.

I suck at photoshop and thus couldn't get it to work, I just get a white screen whenever I do the merge.

you have to change the blend mode of the upper layer before you merge.

Sweet looking ones guys!

Try starting off with a cloud texture and following the steps and you will end up with what looks to be a ball of clouds. You can overlay this on the final image to give it a little more of a sphere shape and provide some texture in the center with a soft light blend mode.
