A physical activity to keep me well in shape. Muscle size doesn't interest me, tone does. I've tried Karate for a couple years, but decided to stop doing that until a later date.

I'm academic and often geekish on my own time, however I do not wish this to reflect on my body. I want something more interesting than running, something that isn't cliche and queer like yoga or pilates, and something with an element of macho-ness to it.

Help me figure out how to keep my body athletic and sexy!

Fencing is all sorts of fun, if you're good at it (read as: don't frustrate easily).

You may be able to get lessons at a YMCA, or otherwise there are private salles all over the place, even in smaller towns.

You can't even compare the two, really. They're not even similar weapons.

Besides, go watch kendo at the college level and stuff. It's not Rurouni Kenshin, sorry.

Well it's based entirely off of personal opinion.

Also kensai did indeed exist, though not exactly like the D&D kensai of course. I referred to them as that to make it a bit more coherent.

To Lashanna's post, I know very well what both are like. While I may not know alot of the specifics of the newer one, I understand the basics of it. As far as the kensai fencers go, it still exists though sparingly and I make the mostly unbacked assumption that I know more of it than anyone else on the boards. As a comparison, me and kensai are probably like Bloodsage and nuclear warfare a few years back when I assume he was mildly fresh in the military.

You really can't compare the two styles. I've practiced kendo/kenjustu for the last 10 years, and just recently returned to the French style of fencing. The reason I've gone back to Europeon schools is because of most things Japanese in this country. An over-flow of teeny bopper wannabe anime samurai. I'll end that there.

Though you are right, Kensai did exist. Though they were usually retired Samurai that chose focus on the sword as a spiritual meditation. it wasn't uncommon when samurai retired to become monks, this was just an extension on that.

I've had some experience with Niten Ichi Ryu, the style developed by Miyamoto Musashi. It survives today in two forms of style. Niten Ichi Ryu is usually a rare form of Japaense fencing in both Japan and the West.

I agree fencing is a lot of fun. I've done it for awhi;le and I love it. Also it is incredibly demanding. Think of your karate but in a sauna and thats about the way it feels in the suit and mask during a match. If you wanted to keep the eastern martial arts thing going you could always check around and see if there are any kendo teachers in your area.

Aquinas, how do you know which style exactly one is doing? Is it based on the moves etc? The experience I've had was under a Russian teacher with foil.

how about cycling? Get a decent hardtail bike and then you can do mild downhill cycling, a good chunk of trail-riding and even cross-country. Add in that you can use it instead of your car a lot of the time, and you've got yourself a winner.

I agree that fencing is both cool and a great full-body workout (though you'll have to lift to keep your dominant forearm from getting vastly huger than the other ).

I'll also weigh in on the styles question, speaking strictly as a former Division I NCAA fencer , to assert that I'll take on any unarmored foe with an epee.

Foil was never a real weapon; it was designed to practice for the epee, which was the dueling weapon. Hence the multitude of rules and the stylized form.
