tan255 = tan(315-60)

tan315-tan60
----------------
1+(tan315)(tan60)

-1-sqrt3
--------
1+sqrt3

multiply top and bottom by 1-sqrt3.....

2+2sqrt3
--------
-2

-1-sqrt3
actual answer: 2+sqrt3

WHERE AM I GOING WRONG

(tan 315)(tan 60) = -sqrt3

-(1+sqrt3) (1+sqrt3)
---------- * ---------
(1-sqrt3) (1+sqrt3)

(-(1+sqrt3)^2)/(1-3)

(-(1+sqrt3)^2)/-2

(1+2sqrt3+3)/2

(2sqrt3+4)/2

2+sqrt3

I like mondays!*die*

Here:

-1-sqrt3
--------
1+sqrt3

tan 315 - tan 60
----------------
1 + (tan 315)(tan 60)

=>

-1 - sqrt3
----------
1 - sqrt3 (tan 315 = -1; and the tan(a - b) formula has a positive sign in the denomenator)

Thus:
(-1 - sqrt3) * (1 + sqrt3)
---------------------
(1 - sqrt3) * (1 + sqrt3)

=> 2 + sqrt3

You weren't even close, sorry. After I finished editting, I checked if anyone else posted, and no one had.

i dunno. i set them up according to the formula and it still doesn't work.

ugh.

why can i not do this?

Usually when I mess up is when I start to rush or try to think too fast. Math requires a slow, steady mindset to do correctly. High school math is very easy, for the most part, most problems are more intimidating than they look blah blah blah yackity shmackity

Also, when I have formulas to deal with, I'll do the first few homework problems with the formulas on a page somewhere deep in my notes so that when I want to refer to them it acts as a deterrent. After the first few, I try to stop looking completely (unless the problems are grouped by formula where a later group requires a different formula, in which case I just start over for the new group).

I can't say for sure without, well, being you. I don't know what's common among people and what's unique to how I do math.

I re-did the problem at least 6 times (changing the method a little each time - oops, this should be negative, wait, this needs to be positive, etc) and could not figure out what I was doing wrong before I posted it. =\

If your ever stumped on a problem, skip it... go back an hour later. Makes things a lot better, and instead of looking at the old work, start over. Doesn't always work, but helps me sometimes.
