Topic: Should I Quit?
Ares
posted 08-07-2003 08:29:19 PM
I work a a pita restaurant that's family owned. There are 5 people working in the day and one at night. Myself or two other employee's. The shifts are usually 6-8hours for me.. Alone. From like 3-4pm to 10-11:30pm.. Again. Alone. While working I have to make, serve, stock, prepare, clean throughly, cashout, clean grill. Although that doesnt' sound a lot, it really is. I'll work one of these shifts straight, with no time to even break for dinner. The people that work in the day. (usually 2-5 of them) just stock and prepare foods as well as serve and make.

18 year old girls should not work alone for 6-8 hours at night. Plus, I'll work 30-45mins after my shift ends cleaning up and stuff without getting paid. I'm part time, yet I got phoned today to work tomorrow an 8 hour shift. Then 5minutes later got called again to work tonight, which I said no to. So, They wanted me to work wed-sun. All shifts alone. Keep in mind that I'm part time. I just feel like I'm being somewhat used.

After my 6 hour shift yesterday, I felt as though my toenails were bleeding...

So, should I quit? And if so, should I give notice? I'm totally unhappy right now.

Unless unemployment in your area is high (like, better then 3%), quit, and tell them WHY you're quitting, but don't burn bridges.

Chances are, they'll try and keep you at either a higher wage, or reduced hours.

If all else fails and he still says "Well, fuck you too!", time for another jobhunt! .. Or you could do commissions. (Kidding!)

Come with me, I will take you far away from the Pita.

In other words, quit. Try to secure work before you quit though but don't stay too long. An unhappy work place is not a good thing.

Also...I'm PM you my number and address...just in case....

Hey, don't be so quick to turn your nose up. Ozzy there did come into a substantial inheritance not long ago....

But seriously, have you tried working the family angle? Surely they give you a little more credence than the average Pita employee. And if they don't--they're just using your family loyalty. Ditch em.

Unless you absolutely can't stand it, don't quit, not yet anyway. Find another job, one that you'll like, and then quit. You have more leverage if you are currently working, because you can wait till you find a new job. Every second your at work, remember that you will be outta there as soon as you secure another job.

Get a good friend to put on a ski mask and "rob" the place one night. Have him shoot a few holes in the walls, then give him all the money in the cash drawer.

Then, your friend gets to keep the money, while you sue the owners for overworking you and putting you into that clearly dangerous situation. You keep the money from the law suit, and they learn how to NOT treat their workers.

Everybody wins.

Just kidding, don't do this.

Tell them you're quitting and let them know that it's because you simply can't continue to work like you are all the time. See if you can't guilt them into giving you shorter hours or fewer responsibilities. Something tells me you wouldn't be very happy just accepting more money.

A young girl working alone at night sounds dangerous. I've always been a little paranoid, but hey, you don't want to wind up getting raped in your shop one day, do you?

No, especially since a friend of my was (raped, not shot) when she worked alone at a gas station. She had a stalker. :/

It's a rare chance, but it does happen. And since you crazy Canadians aren't allowed to carry weapons, I'd say it probably happens more often than it should.

It happens to people in their own homes. Nowhere is one-hundred percent totally safe. A girl working alone at night sounds like a dangerous situation.

So I could walk around with a big ol' sword strapped to my back and it'll be perfectly legal?

It's legal to carry it, not legal to pull it out and use it.

You can take that sentance any way you choose.

I say give them a two week notice. My brother was in a similar position to the one you were in and that's what he did. Maybe they'll try to work something out with you. If not, screw 'em.

Another thing, you should never feel obligated to work extra hours. A lot of employers try to take advantage of their employees and make them feel that they have to work overtime or more days at a whim. If you don't want to work, just say "No." Don't give an explanation. Just "No." If they don't respect that, its not your fault, its theirs.

If it's a family owned business, they probably don't give a shit about you. I'd look for a new job immediately. This goes double if they try to "bend" labor laws, like your allowance of breaks.

At 18, though you may not financially need a job, having work experience for your resume is pretty much mandatory for the future. However, there is no reason to have a job that you hate if you don’t need one to survive. Do what you have to either get a more enjoyable job or something else close to what you want to do when you get a career.

As a side note, when you are looking for a new job, do not complain about your current one. Always try to keep a positive attitude.

a knife may not be the best choice for a defensive weapon for a lot of people. it can be taken and used against you if you hesitate using it, especially if the attacker overpowers you.

a tazer or mace would be more useful, imo. thing is, even a gun is only effective if you can pull it out before you get overwhelmed.

Unless it's a really fucked-up, nasty looking knife. Then you can just scare the would-be attackers away by showing it to them.

technically, there should be atleast 2 people at all times. Putting one person in a store is just plain idiocy. Talk to the manager/owner. Tell them you don't feel safe being there alone for 6-8 hours or more. Also.. don't do shit for em if you're off the clock, or sont punch out/sign out until you are finished. Clear enough that they're taking advantage of you already. I've always made a habit of not coming in when my job "calls." You don't have me scheduled? sorry.. got other obligations already.

Yeah, I guess. I think though that I'm going to quit today, but take all of my shifts for next week, just so that they don't have to worry about it. It's easier that way since the week after I can't work evenings since the buses don't run and I don't have any other way to get home after like 10.
