There's this show on discovery science that's saying Lycanthropy is a form of schitophrenia where the afflicted have delusions of becoming an animal combined with mild seizures.

You can induce lycanthropy by stimulating certain parts of the temporal lobe though any number of methods, including drugs, a sharp blow, or just natural predisposition.

Most people believe they are wolves.

There's also a disorder similar to classic "vampire" lore. Subject's own blood can't support them, causing rapid degradation of tissues, but hemoglobin from processed outside sources can be ingested to give them the proper nutrients. They also tend to develop light sensitivity

Can't remember what it was called. One of the early CSI episodes had someone who suffered from it committing murders. Hemophagia (blood eater) possibly? I forget.

What do you get when you put a baby in a blender?

....nevermind, I don't want to get banned. That particular punchline is too much.

Isn't that the reasoning behind the vampires in the movie Blade?

I don't know how to be sexy. If I catch a girl looking at me and our eyes lock, I panic and open mine wider. Then I lick my lips and rub my genitals. And mouth the words "You're dead."

Aha! Found it.

Porphyria

This a symptom that can make people think of it as the "vampire disease".

Sun sensitivity can occur in all but two types of porphyria. The degree of sensitivity to sunlight varies considerably. Patients with sun sensitivity have high levels of porphyrins in the blood plasma which, depending on the type of porphyria, have originated from the liver or the bone marrow. Ultraviolet light interacts with porphyrin in such a way as to damage skin tissue. Some treatments may help patients tolerate sun exposure even without lowering porphyrin levels. In some cases, treatment can lower porphyrin levels, and sunlight can be tolerated.

While the vampiric taint is described like a virus in the movies, in the comics Vampires originated from demons, created from the Darkhold, an ancient book of evil magic. This is where the Pureblood vampires come from, but the taint can be passed on by turning their prey, except these 'halfbloods' are sort of second class in the vampire world.
