how do I make the active selection transparent in photoshop?

I've got an image where what i have selected i would like to have be transparent, but i cannot figure out how...

(as in for a trnasparent gif)

The background must be pre-set as transparent.

Copy your whole image to clipboard, make a new gif file with transparent background.

what he sayed, you need to make a new page & select it as transparent backgrond, then select & drag over to the new image & voila =)
