w0ot?

I might actually graduate on time! My advisor just called me (yes, it was almost midnight when he called) and we talked about why my thesis was meeting such resistence.

I had been very pessimistic about my chances of success, no matter what I did, but now I see a slight chance of success.

Wish me luck.

I've been so damned stressed lately I'm not sleeping, barely eating, and doing nothing but work, even though we have to be ready for the movers in a week. My marriage definitely does not need the additional stress, either.

But I feel better (almost) now. Writing is much easier when I think it might actually be worth the effort.

I see no angst here! Unless you use one of the fruity, literal meanings. Who would do that, though?

I actually used the word gestalt in my oral comprehensive exams yesterday.

That was the strangest thing I've seen in a long time, a Sage post titled Angst.

But, on the subject, it's always helpful to know why something is being bothersome, that usually provides a way to fix the issue.

That's been the problem. When it was first rejected, I wasn't given a way forward. Just, "This is fatally flawed, and I don't think you'll be able to graduate on time."

Thanks, sir.

Took me two gruelling hours of face-to-face confrontation to get a verbal okay for a rewrite, and two weeks to find the real root of the problem.

And when I turn in the revised copy on Monday, there's only five days to have it read, make any necessary changes, and get it signed. It'll run just under 100 pages, too.

Hope everything goes alright for you with that revised copy, Sage. With all the work it sounds like you put into it, it'd be a shame if you didn't graduate on time.

Is this the paper you at one point said something along the lines of you wouldn't finish if it wasn't like a pass or fail sort of deal because it's such a pain in the ass?

If so, then I'm glad you've got more reason to finish it now. There's never so hopeless a struggle as one fought for no reason.

If it isn't, then I think you gots lots on your plate hehehehe. Hope when this is all done with you can kick back and relax with your wife, not to mention blow off some steam for yourself.

In the meantime, amigo, just take it easy, work hard, move on. You know the stuff, you're probably more grammatically anal than I am, you're brilliant, and you'll finish this and it'll come out fine.

Hehehe.

Thanks, guys.

It is so much easier to sacrifice and struggle when there seems to be a point. Raw pride and self-discipline only go so far.

Rather than start a new angsty thread, I'll just rez this one!

Wonder which is the worse crime?

Anyway, I'm just starting to edit the final chapter of my Thesis From Hell.

Should've been done last night.

Except that Chapter 3 was the critical one, that had caused all the earlier problems. So I made sure I got it right.

Then I started Chapter 4 last night, and the major re-write of 3 forced a major realignment of 4 that I was unable to figure an elegant way around.

But, wait! There's more:

I never have problems with my computer. I'm exceptionally carefull about security/viruses/spyware, and I install only mainstream software, for the most part. I maintain a strictly vanilla hardware setup, using only name-brand components.

So why the flying fuck did Word eat my Chapter 4 this afternoon, corrupt the data on every subsequent file I opened, and make me spend three precious hours recovering my work?1

I now have numerous backup, needless to say.

So here I am, not having slept in 2 days, looking at my second all-nighter in a row. I think I've had about 10 hours of sleep in the last 4 days, and almost all of that was Friday night.

See, kids?

Procrastination is a bad thing. If I'd turned the thing in a month earlier, I wouldn't be scrambling because a prof doesn't like it. Not that I've ever had anything I've written rejected before, but still.

That's the other fun part--it's the longest thing I've ever written.

I'm starting to edit pages 72-80, then I'm done. The rest is bibliography and stuff.

Ewww.

I score almost as low on P as I do on S and F--which is to say not at all.

When I tested (for real) last year, I scored 100% in NTJ. Had a very small E component that marred my perfect I.

When I'm not a stressball, I'm about 75%/25% I/E.

So neener.

Sure.

I'll have to check if I'm allowed, though--the Air Force owns the work, since it's a graduation requirement.

But I think they make them available electronically from Air University, anyway.

Uh, I'll get back to you on that.
