My mother wants me to build her a computer now - I asked her what price range we were talking about; she said $500-600.
Now, I haven't priced PC parts in a while, but I'm guessing I could build one faster than my P3-700E for that...
She mentioned she wants to be able to use the phone while on the internet, so I told her "You know, Mom, just getting me another phone line isn't going to allow that - we'd need cable or DSL."
"That's what we'll do, then." 
YAY! An escape from 56k hell!
So, suggestions? All she needs is the proverbial "PC to do e-mail and web surfing with."
I got nearly all the parts for my machine there for a little under $600.
1.2 GHZ, 512 RAM, 40 GB hd, yadda yadda yadda.

I wont build a computer faster than mine for any family member. Its sort of an unwritten rule of mine.

I suggested it to my mom in jest. I think she said "Whatever..."
Besides, she wants me to make her a computer, not upgrade mine and give her the old one.
