Topic: our generation: the LAZY generation?

Some people refer to us as the "Lazy" generation. and why? since around World War Two, all people thought of was jobs. does it pay enough? Am I rich enough?
Now, I am not one to judge things or whatever, but that is stupid. We are just seeing that no aount of money will make us happy. We are settling into new technology. Is it so wrong that we accept the world is a bad place, and ake better places with technology?
Me and my brother reached the same conclusion. we are not "Lazy." we are simply finding true happiness..

Does you agree? Or no?

Well, I'm incurably lazy...

But I doubt that has anything to do with the current generation... Just that I'd rather sit around all day and drinking beer than forcing my butt at college.

Lasyness just means we don't like to do work, which is true, Sloth is not doing work to a point where it is harmful, lasy is not a bad term.

I am no where near lazy. My brother, however, is a lazy slob.

For example...my mother recently announced that we would have to do our own laundry. She announced this on Friday, the end of the week, near what was formerly designated as Laundry Day For All.

I wanted clean clothes to wear this week, so on Sunday morning I did my laundry.

My brother managed to wait until Tuesday to do his.

Right now, I have laundry going. I didn't want to wait until I was buried in my clothes to do it.

My brother will most likely get into the routine of doing it whenever he feels like it, and end up wearing alot of dirty clothes each day. I refuse to.

Yesterday, after I got home from school, I let the dog out, made sure my room wouldn't kill me if I was walking around it in the dark, made and ate an afternoon snack, did my Geometry homework, and drank three cans of Dr. Pepper.

NYET!!!

Um, uh, yeah. God forbid anyone actually go out, do real things, and make the world a better place. You're right:

Much better to retreat into fantasy worlds.

well bloodsage, here is MY view:
Why bother going out there. it isn't gonna change. We will never have world peace. we will never have a happy world. so fuck it. I ain't going out there. better things to do than go get hurt. so basically we are now presented with this: Do we go in the real world and try to change it, or accept the world as it is, and find something better? Honestly, I Choose fantasy.

Things don't get done because of people with that kind of attitude. That whole "nothing I do will matter, so why bother" will never get you anywhere in life except the gutter.

Fantasy's okay, but if your life becomes it, then something's wrong. Things can only get done if people want them to get done.

Then don't whine when the rest of us, who have real experiences doing real things--at least trying to make the world a better place--look down on those who don't make the effort.

Since when is guaranteed success a prerequisite for action?

"Oh, it's ultimately hopeless anyway, so why try!" neither inspires nor deserves respect as a philosophy.

That's not personal, but rather an evaluation of the underlying philosophy, so please take it as such.

What Bloodsage said.

The mere act of trying to improve the world is noble. Who cares if you accomplish nothing. At least when you look back on your life, you can say, "I tried," rather than, "Wow, life really sucked. I'm glad I didn't live it."

My life is not all fantasy. I prefer to watch a real star than a computer screen. What I am say though is that as long as I get by, I will prefer fantasy to real life. Sure, I have enjoyment in real life, but fantasy gives you something more than Real life..

But you need something to sustain that fantasy, and laziness certainly won't do it. It might sound all laziness and fun right now, but believe me ; once you have to find a job for yourself, and pay for your own food, you don't live that lazy anymore.

I doubt previous generations were any better on laziness. It just comes with age and responsibility(sp).

Aparently you've never had a girlfriend...or maybe you have. I used to think that, then I *no offense* got a life.

You can't be in the front seat pulling a 360 Method to fakie in the virtual world

You can't snuggle as you watch a movie with your girlfriend in the virtual word

You can't feel the drama and pain of a hockey game in the virtual world

I could go on and on...But, I think that we're not a "lazy" generation. But we (my generation being we) has a cynical attitude.

I would disagree completely, if anything, we are perhaps one of the busiest. While we may not like doing work, did anybody in the 50's, or even back to prehistoric times ever truly like going to the daily grind? Due to my own hectic schedule, I rarely have large chunks of time to goof off and be lazy. Today's kids in particular are busy to the max, with lots of homework and projects, mixed in with after-school sports, piano lessons, student council, and many other activities.

Our work hours have actually increased, Americans work the most of anybody in the world as far as hours go. While other countries in the world like Japan or Germany might boast much more days spent working, their shifts are far shorter. Countries like Mexico and Italy make goofing off/relaxing a priority, the Mexicans going so far as to devote a period of the day to a nap, or siesta. Also, Americans work lots of overtime, increasing our hours, while providing a bit of extra money, which is always good.

While Americans party a great deal, our work more than makes up for it, even in childhood. Though every red-blooded man in this country likes to plop down on the sofa with a bag of chips and a beer to watch the Superbowl, most likely earlier on he had completed a 8+ hour workday.

Also, to get ahead in life, you have to be busy with work. To excel in school, you have to work hard in class, and devote some of your time after school to activities and homework. To keep a job, you have to work diligently and report almost always for duty. This increased amount of time devoted to work has created a excessive need for entertainment to replace the oftentimes boring drill of work, which may have earned us the title of the "Lazy Generation", because we play hard, but then again, we also work harder.

I for one, will most likely fill my day mostly with work, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun at all. Work will continue until I have been retired, living in a nine-bedroom house in Hawaii, with a couple billion tucked away in a savings account Work pays, yet it also pays to play. Work hard, but don't forget to play just as hard.

I don't know enough facts about this to really answer adequately. But a thought did strike me while reading it. the hippees, unless I'm mistaken, were rather lacksidaisical(sp?). And they had a different kind of fantasy world. one found in various drugs. Perhaps we are entering a tech hippee age where love is replaced by apathy and drugs replaced by MMORPGs.

We don't like to work? Duh.

But the point is that, as a whole, we do work and we get things done. I'm not speaking for America only at this point, either.

The "Lazy" generation? Nah. We're just not afraid to admit it anymore. The insult "Slacker" has become something of a sub-culture. We have more options for fun that involve sitting on our asses for long periods of time.

However, we're not really all that different than those that came before.

Yah, we have some stuff in common with the hippies of the '60s. Just as they had some stuff in common with the Flappers of the '20s. Every so often, society takes a step back from the normal grind and says "Fuck this shit, I'm gonna have fun!".

The '20s didn't kill us. The '60s didn't kill us. The current generation isn't going to kill us.

It looks different to you because no other generation has been able to "goof off" in the ways that we can today. The fact that our recreation involves virtual worlds and huge group fantasies has less to say about us than you think. Don't forget, there was a time when costume balls were cutting edge fantasy, and everyone that could went to them. Our escapism just has easier access and a better soundtrack.

The world will go on, with or without you. So jump in and do what you can, and have fun when you can. Just remember, the next "slacker generation" is gonna' have its own kind of fun.

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.
