There's been a lot of speculation as to whether the new wave of T2 woes thats plaguing some of us (the mysterious partial 5 to 10 second freezes) are due to some new stealth addition in the most recent patch or due to @home's "issues". Of course @home says its all working as intended and whatnot (maybe they were trained by verant) - but I'd like to test for myself. Anyone know of a site that will help test your connection's performance? I'd prefer a site not affiliated with an isp, as i tend to lean towards conspiracy theories and don't really trust them to tell me my connection is crap if it really is =)

I've never actually seen an accurate connection tester on a website. I think ZDnet had one up for a while, which was 2 seperate webpages, but even with that (Im on a T-3 here) it would off and on give me readings off the scale.
It may still be there...

Connection Speed Test

Give this one a try Piper, I just checked it out with my own connection (DSL). Tests upload and download streams with just the click of a few buttons

640k connection, I averaged 62.9 kb/s download. Not too shabby

Does downstream translate to download speeds for things like demo files and patches or only web browsers?

Either way who is your ISP and what is your connection device.

Packet loss can vary depending on where you're trying to get to. To check packet loss for a specific IP address, just open up a DOS prompt and

ping -t hostname.com

The "-t" will make it ping continuously until you hit Control-C. Let it run for a while, then hit Control-C and it will summarize the pings. One of the values it gives is packet loss.

If you ARE getting packet loss and you want to find out WHERE, do a tracert to the host, then go down that list and ping each of them to see where the packet loss starts.

Back when cable modems were new a lot of cable users used cable modems to host ftps, game servers, etc. This used up a ton of bandwith. @Home, and Roadrunner too I think, have since implemented upload caps to prevent this.

DSL Reports has a great speed test. They also have some other services which might help you improve your connection.

Completely up to you how long "a while" is. The longer you let it run, the more precise the reading will be, but you can get a pretty good guess by letting it go for 15-30 seconds or so.
