Because my other pc had a hard drive problem it was recently replaced by a new system so I have installed EQ recently on this new machine.

Are you using a Dialup connection or a DSL/Cable type connection?

Well there ya go Get rid of ME and go to 98!
Does it occur after a reboot? You want want to try a basic system cleanup. (You know, delete all *.tmp files and *.chk files, run a scandisk and a defrag) to clear up any memory hogs.
It's a cheesy fix, but it works wonders.
If that doesn't work, lemme know.

Yeah, but I'm trying to keep it easy - Thistle's already claimed to be computer illiterate.

True.. but theres the odd chance Thistle knows how to do that
I havnt tried a defrag so I will take your advice and do some cleanup...also when you refer to virtual memory, I should have it on "let windows manage my virtual memory settings" right?
I dont know to much about that so didnt want to fiddle with it.

It should be fine for you, but this would be where you would change what Skaw is talking about. You can adjust if you feel the need to. It will usually create a swap file, which takes up space.
My roomie is a little better at this stuff, I will mention it to him and see if he can fiddle with it. But first I will clean it up.
Thanks again for the assistance
However I cleaned up files in a big way and defragmented. Restarted and so far no probs with Eq..
/cheers at all the nice folks

What about it? I've had 512 MB of RAM for almost two years now.
Step 1 : Reboot your PC. More often than not, this fixes it.
Step 2 : Try disabling programs that run in the background. Insufficient system resources can make running high-end games like EQ tough. (This means close ICQ/AIM/Yahoo/MSN Messenger, and any other programs you like to run in the background)
Step 3 : Check your system resources after disabling this stuff. 80% or higher is usually enough. (To check : Right-click my computer, then click on properties, then performance) If you've got less than 80%, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and start disabling things. Make sure that you DON'T disable explorer or Systray. The rest can go. If everything but those two is gone and you're still low on resources, time to upgrade. If you've got a high end system and you're low on resources, that usually indicates a virus or TSR (Or just tons of memory leaks) that have eaten away at your memory. If this is the case, usually the best solution (especially when it comes to the leaks; Win2K is infamous for this) is a clean reinstall.
Step 4 : This usually means it's narrowed down to a few things by now. The next thing I'd try is reinstalling EQ. It could simply be a corrupted EQ file. (I would put this more towards the beginning, but often
Step 5 : After a clean install/patch, if it isn't working, it's definitely the system. At this point I'd start checking DirectX and my video drivers.
And remember, if all else fails, format and reload. That fixes 99% of the problems you'll ever encounter. And that's also why people should backup, backup, backup.
I knew a guy once who formatted once every two weeks and restored from the same CD... only installed the minimum he needed (windows, certain games, et cetera), and backed up all program files (Saved games, EQ char .opt files, and so on and so forth) to disks. His machine ran smooth as silk, he said he hardly ever encounters a single problem. That may be a little excessive, but it demonstrates the point.
