Last time I bought a game that looked good, $50 out of my pocket for something I spent no more then a week playing... 
When compared to other OFPS's, there's a tremendous amount more thought involved in everything from blowing up the other guys to tactics.
Despite the fact that I tend to get extremely pissed off at times, the game is tremendous fun, and more than worth the $40 (not $50, unless you're in canada).
I've played Tribes longer than any other game I own, except EQ.
I'm personaly waiting for DNF and Red Faction.
While cs is free, you get what you pay for.
The weapons to not shoot or act right so you'll be shouting at your screen most of the time because the bullets go everywhere but where you aim.
If you want to play a good game of cs, get a lan going and try to get cs 6.4 or 3.0.

also if your just looking for a mutliplayer game then get Star Trek: Elite Force very good multiplayer and such if you buy the addon for about 20-15 bucks plus the orginal it should come out to the cost of tribes very good game its built with the quake 3 engine 
This is how a number of us feel right now about Tribes 2. The game is excellent when it is working properly. The playability is incredible and the graphics are great. Plus making your own maps and customizing the skins of your armor is great. 2 patches ago they made things nearly unplayable. Packetloss and "redjacks" (lockups essentially) that have been making the game impossible to play.
I'll agree that a top notch system is the best thing for this game. Athlon 750, 256MB GeForce 3 and Soundblaster Live Xgamer on cable here and the game (when it worked properly) was well and truely awesome. As a paintballer, capture the flag is my favorite and this feeds the need when I'm out of money to play paintball.
The next couple patches of the game will be cruicial for this company. If they don't fix thier problems soon a bunch of the short fused teens playing this game are going to abandon it for something more stable. It's annoying to climb aboard a gunship and be locked up having to either reboot or try to task manager your way out of the game.

You don't need a weapon when you're on the wildcat. It's much more fun to run people over from behind.

While the bike is great for running around with out being seen, the tank belive it or not is THE best thing for running over people.
