I'm in it just for the ridiculous shoulder pads. Also, to eventually fly a Romulan Warbird.

I used to play as a science officer but got bored when every mission was blam blam shoot shoot boom boom. I know they added non-combat missions but I don't feel the urge to go back.
They also added user-created missions; there are apparently some really stellar non-combat ones with engaging characters, storylines, and puzzles.
Or so I hear. I spend most of my time blowing shit the fuck up.

Oh shit, I am down for that. I've been wanting to pilot a Romulan Warbird since the very start. Time for some sweet sweet cloaking action.
Here's an album of the top-end warbirds available, including the D'deridex.
I think all of them come with cloaking devices, and the more tactical-oriented warbirds have battle cloaks.

They've also added Warp Cores(Feds and KDF)/Singularity Cores(For Romulans) that can give various power bonuses and such - for example, x percent of your weapon power is added to another system for free, plus +5 to max power levels to a system, etc.... not to mention lots of added space and ground traits for your captain.
There is going to be full 1-50 content for all three factions, and the little of the Rommie stuff I've seen looks pretty good - I especially like the mission chains in Paradise City on Nimbus III... also known as "the place from Star Trek V". The mid-boss of this chain? Hassan the possibly Dying. I haven't gotten father than that point yet.
I could go on for a while (RCS accelerators and Starship Impulse Engines give much stronger boosts to turn rate - my Odyssey is no longer quite the wallowing pig... I dare call it nimble, comparatively speaking.)... but if you quit playing STO in the first year, you probably won't recognize it if you log back in after May 23rd.

The Mogai's also a canon ship. It's from Nemesis.
edit: And now that I look at the T'Varo, it's the Bird of Prey from Enterprise. Zephyer Kyuukaze fucked around with this message on 05-10-2013 at 08:18 AM.
I will say that the Federation and Klingon non-canon ships can range from hideous to better than the originals. The Armitage-class looks fucking boss, as does the Sao Paulo-class. The Patrol Escorts are also pretty nifty looking.

Also, oh god, I just logged in after not having played for over three years. Why has everything changed and why do I have to reassign all my skill points? I have no clue where to put them and what the heck are duty officers?

Yeah, I meant those canon ships.

The skill trees were revamped over a year ago, mainly to allow more flexibility - there aren't specific skills for energy weapons TYPES (phaser, quantum, etc) and there are no longer specific ship=class skills - it's a lot more effective to switch ships frequently since you no longer have to spec for Exploration Cruisers or Escorts specifically, for example.
I myself switch between my Odyssey (main ship), my Armitage (For Free Dilithium Hour, aka the Mirror Invasion), and my Chimera (for ESTFs), etc....
What, you thought WoW was the only game that had you respec a character after a major patch?
Anybody got a link to a newbie guide or something detailing the last few changes?

Is the Reapers fleet even still alive? I'm apparently still in it.
Add the fact you're pretty much forced to be a good guy and not join the Imperials and it's all too much for Mort. Maybe you get to join them later, but no thanks, already lost interest.
Also liking Trek more than Wars helps too.

Faffed about for a bit on the test server before shaking my head and quitting, makes me remember why I only play SWTOR. STO's clunky gameplay, confusing UI and a voice over worse than most eastern european RPG's just make it look and feel like cheap crap. Even the Romulan opening cut scenes look like they're straight out of the 90's.Add the fact you're pretty much forced to be a good guy and not join the Imperials and it's all too much for Mort. But Romulans are racist, xenophobic cocks. Even their good guys are still pretty awful.

Science Fed all the way. I'm the tall hairless blue guy with the air of superiority.. man I remember spending like two hours in the character builder making that guy just after launch.
Also noticed the Caitians all over the place. The furries must be overjoyed.
PS: The Reapers fleet was full of inactives so I took control and disbanded it. Mortious fucked around with this message on 05-12-2013 at 02:54 PM.

I was playing last night but ran into a problem with the Guardian of Forever mission (Lieutenant Commander 14) where it wouldn't give me the option to go through the portal. Spoke to the Admiral via comms but nothing. No option. So just left the planet. Mortious fucked around with this message on 05-14-2013 at 03:15 AM.

I have noticed most of the other people I run into are Engineering or Tactical. The last time I saw a dedicated Science ship was when a Vice Admiral flying one of the new ones past me at Earth Spacedock. I'm still confused about the skills but I've been putting all my points into purely science with points in other skills when forced (by all the science ones being full). Also noticed that every so often the game will tell me someone got a Tholian Web Spinner ship or a Jem'hadar Heavy Carrier. If you go into Notifications (under the triangle button at the lower right corner of the mini-map, you can uncheck "fly-in" for the Admin and Gameplay announcements. That way, you won't get a yellow message on your screen when someone you've likely never even seen unboxes a lockbox ship.
Here's a tip for skill point allocation... in the top of the Skills window, you can choose either yourself, your ship, or one of your boffs from the first drop down, and then choose a particular skill/power from the second. The skill boxes that directly affect that skill/power will light up. This is also a good way to find which ship consoles to pick to enhance them.

Luckily, I get up early on the weekends, so I should be able to sneak and and just stay on all day.

For my own frustration level, I might wait a few more days before doing another Starbase Fleet Defense... all the lowbie Romulan players cause the fleet action to a. take forever and b. give lousy fleet mark rewards because even sidekicked to level 50, they still can't do enough damage to keep the objectives alive. :/

More like "in their end-o".
But seriously, do that from close range and it will be YOUR hull that's on fire, too. Yes, you can damage yourself with your own plasma torps if you're too close. NPC Warbirds used to blow themselves up, all the time.
