I got to the point where I just hated the game and nightly raiding, so I'm planning to start mostly fresh on a new server. I figure I'll send money and heirlooms from my existing characters, maybe bags too, and otherwise leave them. I'm seriously considering deleting all of my existing characters once I'm done passing on whatever items they have; kind of hard to get around the idea of deleting three 85's, especially since some of them have been around for several years.

Yeah, that's why I quit. It's also why I quit every facebook game, and when I quit rage of bahamut that'll probably be why.
I just don't need mindless tedium in a game.
I don't see MOP making the game massively better.

Any of the vannila plays still left probally won't last around MOP. Doesn't even remotely seem like WoW from back then. MoP Doesn't seeml any better than Catackalysm, just more accesible for new players.
My feel of it so far is they have tried to take to much from other new MMo's, give the game the same bland feeling those asian grindfesty ones have.
The most fun I have had with it so far has been playing with my hunter cause the pet scaleing was turned off and had my godzilla like devialsaur running around Stormwind.
Kinda feel sorry for the class trainer NPC's, they only seem to exist to buy repecs from >.>

So they're going to continue with the "we'll let everyone have the same epics, just wait for the buff to scale up and make the content faceroll" idea?Well shit.
Isn't that pretty much the formula for every MMO? The challenge modes look pretty interesting and the scenario concept looks like it might change things up a bit. Talent system changes are pretty badass. None of the above really represents much of a departure from the faceroll scaling but they're neat.

Overall, I think they really shot themselves in the foot with the MoP beta, for reasons that are too long to go into here. They're really reaching for content to appeal to a wider base (Pet battles, fucking farmville and plants vs zombies ingame, etc) in order to hold onto a wider subscriber base. I dont mind the grind-fest of factions and mounts and pets and shit for raiding, but I guess there are only so many times I can re-level to the new maximum and be fucking utterly useless until I get gear without saying fuck it. At least with LK, there was an interesting storyline to conclude (that was done shittily, since no horde got the leadup to it, only alliance did because "Horde got that awesome thrall quest in outlands!!! wwwaaaahhh!"), cataclysm has thrall-jesus-metzen self-masturbating his way into the storyline which made no fucking sense and was just a way to close anything having to do with old gods for a while.
I guess I'll play ToR, and pretend my Female Trooper is Fem Shep, saving the galaxy again. But with lightsabers. And a Cat-boy love interest voiced by Lassiter from Psych.

Anyway, I don't mind the same-ness of MMOs. In a way, the familiarity and repetition is soothing. What I mind is paying every month. I feel like every minute I'm not playing, I'm wasting money. Which is weird because I don't feel that way about my cable TV, or my Netflix, or any other monthly subscription, but there it is.
That's why I like the F2P stuff. If I want to buy something cool, I do it, and I don't feel bad later when I don't play for a day, or a week.

Bad comparison there... "Privilege Subscription" vs "Consumption Subscription"... You're paying for the privilege to play WoW so it feels like a waste unplayed but the rest of what you named are things you're paying for the convenience to consume at your discretion.

WoW and television subscriptions are exactly the same, maybe you meant television and F2P?
quote:
The logic train ran off the tracks when Random Insanity Generator said:
You pay for cable to have access to the medium, yes. But it's the perception that's different. You're paying to have it there on hand for when you want to use it. You know that basically fuck-all is going to change and it will be the same 3 months from now as it is today. WoW however won't be. You know it, they know it. You pay your money for the ability to participate in the game and that puts a different perspective to it. If you're not there to be involved then you're missing out. TV shows have reruns. Those epic and legendary drops don't. More or less it's the Skinner Box we're arguing over. TV hasn't had that in a long time for most of us. MMO's still do and it's the only way their business survives.
TV has reruns, MMOs have old instances that can generally be revisited to procure old items; just as reruns eventually go off the air in favor of other shows, instances and items available change over time. New TV shows supplant old ones and new dungeons do the same; the march of content continues.
In just about every way, up to and including the ability to seek alternate sources of deprecated content on the internet (torrents sites and private servers), TV subscription runs parallel to MMO subscription. The perceptual difference is more on the order that television has been around over 50 years and survived becoming the unifying experience of multiple generations; MMORPGs are a much newer phenomenon and WoW is the first to become a truly universal game, paralleling early television in some ways (Maradon made this point some years back).
Point being, TV and MMORPGs are essentially the same but MMORPGs haven't got that subconscious status as something literally everyone does.

Have you tried Vindictus? It really plays out more like an Action RPG than the normal MMO fare. Lots of environmental hazards and destructable props, even breakable monster parts, you can end up turning in to makeshift weaponry. Secondary weapons like Chains can be used to tie monsters down while the rest of your party beats on them. Even one of the tanking classes literally grapples enemies and restrains them for a bit. So the 2 paragraphs preceding this statement were tl;dr and this is still the same point.
It is a perception difference. We're used to the TV bit. The MMO bit still has Skinner going for it, but that's about the only thing it's got going for it. If they don't do something new, it's over. People aren't willing to just pay to have it available to them because it's been with them forever.

Ha! Fair enough. WoW doesn't have real-felt achievement left in it, because I've seen so much of its content. The fantasy stuff gets really old after a while. It's nice to step into a world that is familiar, with different mechanics and what amounts to kotor3.
I think I get what RIG is saying though. The content for WoW is "now". There are weekly/daily lockouts/VP limits, rarespawns for an(other) mount, friends and guildies that can only raid at certain times during the week, etc. So if you miss a day in WoW, you miss something that might not happen again. Sort of the same if you have a TV with no DVR (They still do that, right?) and you have shows you are interested in, yet keep forgetting to watch. Feels like wasted time.

Looks cool, but I see a few red flags. Freemium, Nexon, Animu kawaii.
But apparently everyone I know has played it and never told me, so I can give it a shot!

I been playing it. It's fun but there are a lot of odd... assumptions in the design. No bank? You rent your haircut?
Why do I have to click "Create Party" three separate times on two different, but seemingly completely redundant screens in order to start a solo mission?

Tried Guild Wars 2?
That's what I'm looking forward to at the moment, just two weeks to go.
My feelings towards GW2 is that it is basically the game WAR dreamed of being, and unless Anet fucks up by rushing the game to release or not having enough content for higher level characters, has the possibility of being a very good game.

PVP for me is an accent, something that you can do for fun now and again, certainly not the highlight of an RPG. The reason being is that it's impossible to balance, and alternately frustrating or boring. Maradon! fucked around with this message on 08-11-2012 at 08:31 PM.

Not GW2. GW1, I'd agree. Leveling was near instant, etc. With GW2, there's a much larger focus on PvE, and I'd definitely call it more of an MMO than GW1.

I'm talking about GW2, not GW1.
They're not even remotely close to being the same game, and if you didn't know that, do yourself a favor and look up some information about the game. It's been in 3 open beta weekends and even more stress tests, so there should be plenty of stuff to see online.
I have high hopes for it, but then again, I've had high hopes for a lot of MMOs. The first 20 levels are fantastic, and the WvWvW combat is amazing. I'm just worried that the game will ship in an unfinished state and will fall flat in PvE later on in the game. Willias fucked around with this message on 08-12-2012 at 10:13 PM.
"GW2 is bad because they took out the parts of GW1 that are stupid and terrible. I liked those features because I am stupid and have a twelve minute attention span. Instead, they added these parts that are genuinely involved, require dedication and long term strategy, and I hate that."
The more I read the cooler it seems. My one reservation was the no-monthly-fee bit. I really couldn't believe that an MMO could (or would bother to) run a robust operation without a monthly revenue stream. Then I ran into this video which concisely addressed each and every thought in my head as if it were made specifically to answer this concern for me.
Other than that, after solving a router problem that prevented me from playing it the first beta weekend, Guild Wars 2 is a damn fun game. Ran through both the Asura and Human 1-15 zones and the game is fun as hell.
This was the boss that spawned at the end of an event chain in the Asura area. It was overtuned as hell (and this was admitted to by a dev) but holy crap was it intense.
$60 well spent (or however much it was)
