I don't keep up with hardware trends so I know nothing about computers and I need a second one. I'm looking for a beast build that's not deep in the diminishing returns of price/performance, but will last me a couple of years.

How much faster would one of those fancy new multi core processors be compared to my e8500 duo that's overclocked to 3.8ghz for either gaming/apps?

Also want a case that only uses 120mm fans for quietness and doesn't have the power supply on the bottom like this retarded Antec P180.

I'll be using this thread as a starting point

Power supply on the bottom is generally a better idea as it means the hot air is routed out before rising through the case. Keeps the top of the case from becoming a hotbox.

Depends if you're running it with fans or not.

They're good for low powered systems for complete silence, or for systems that're overclocked when using fans.

Or, you know, normal systems using fans?

There aren't many ways to fit 120mm fans on a CPU, but given the alternative of having an 65mm fan whirring away at 5000+RPM, a 120mm aftermarket cooler is a cheap way to buy silence.

Depends on the fan.

Even the stock Intel cooler is surprisingly quiet.

My point was many of these HUGE (and normally quite expensive) tower coolers are simply fads unless you're overclocking and sticking on some high speed 120mm fans. Or running a low power system with no fans. If you're running normal fans in a normal system.. then congrats you just spent a lot more than someone else who's going to hear about 4db more than you. OH THE NOISE. THE HORROR.

My system has a stock Intel cooler and I can barely hear it, the sound of a mechanical drive is louder.

Though if he is overclocking, two thumbs up. Good cooler.

So let's turn this into the hardware question thread. Looks like I'll be putting together a completely new system around the new year, and not sure what the state of play is.

Current system:

Lian Li mid-tower case
Intel 2.66 GHz quad-core processor
4 GB shitty RAM
320 GB WD ATA hard drive (note this & the RAM seem to be my system bottlenecks)
GeForce 8800 GTS
I'm using the on-board sound, since the X-FI card doesn't seem to work
2x 19-inch 16x9 monitors
Win7 Ultimate

Uses:
I primarily game on console now, but I do play the occasional game on the PC, and will probably get back into the MMORPGEIEIO world the next time something looks interesting. I want to keep the high end gaming options open, while having enough memory and graphics horsepower to do better photo/video editing than I can with the current system.

I'm pretty much only interested in Intel chips (I hear we're looking at 6-core now?), and prefer GeForce video unless something's radically changed lately.

So what should I base the new system around? I'd like a mobo that is stable and can handle a bucketful of RAM, and a way to set up a hard drive (not really interested in SSDs right now, but might be talked into it) that's faster than the current 5800rpm ATA setup. Not really interest in budget solutions, either; looking for high end w/o being bleeding edge--it's usually obvious where the $$ skyrocket for minimal performance gain.

Ideas?

Edit: I built the current system Christmas of '06.

Here's the hardware of the comp I just built to run battlefield 3/skyrim

i5 2500k
ridiculous nh-d14 cooler that may not fit the case you choose
Hyper 212 alternative cooler thats smaller and cheaper
8gb ram ddr3 1600
asus p8p67 mobo
650w modular power supply
gtx 560 ti

Only overclocked the cpu 4.4ghz for the time being because its giving me guff.

As for SSD, I couldn't recommend them enough. The difference is ridiculous. Cold boot to being able to browse in about 20 seconds.. apps like photoshop in around 5 seconds.

Also this case is neat in that the drives are truly hot swappable. The sata connectors are built into the chassis so they plug in when you slide the drive bays into it.

$250, but after dealing with the Antec P180 for like 5-6 years, this is well worth it.

You can run all your wires behind the motherboard backplate. There is also a cutaway behind the cpu so you can install a heatsink without taking the motherboard out of the case.

Complete overkill until you're working in scientific or video (especially live streaming) applications. It's perfectly fine to stick with the i5 if you have a limited budget. The money is better spent on a higher-end video card or perhaps a larger monitor.

That, and if you're buying a computer now for those purposes now, you'd want an i7-2600k anyway. The Sandy Bridge advantage cannot be overstated.

I'm still rocking an ancient 3GHz Core 2 Duo.

Very few games take full advantage of multi threading, or even place a heavy load on the CPU over the GPU. I can rock The Witcher 2 on full graphics settings just fine because it shoves everything on the GPU. To be honest as long as you have a CPU that you know won't create a bottleneck for the rest of the system, you're golden in regards to gaming. Media creation is another matter but I don't do a lot of that anyway.

Pretty much at the limit of what my old socket 775 DDR2 board can take though.

Is that wattage going to be enough to support both video cards? Aren't those usually in the 350 - 400w requirement?

And that seems kind of pricey for only 850w.

I'm looking at upgrading Deth and I soon as well. Our current cases are ancient and don't have the advantage of the motherboard/drive bays that can slide out, so top my list is getting cases a lot more modular to deal with.

Plus we're running like 2.7GHz dual cores and quad cores have really come down in price. We're still on XP too and if I'm looking to upgrade Windows version, I want to bump up the hard drive space and go up to two monitors at the same time. Especially with how easy 7 has made setting up two monitors.

It's just really time for a good upgrade.

I guess the time is just ripe for computer upgrades, because I'm looking to beef up my 3-year-old computer here in the next few weeks. Running a 1.9GHz Core 2 Duo, 2x 1GHz Kingston PC2-6400 DDR2 sticks, and a GeForce 9600GT 512MB.

Socket 775 quad-cores should be quite reasonable by now, along with another couple of the same memory sticks and an upgrade to Win7 in order to run a DX10/11 compliant video card, should put me in a pretty good position for new games coming out.

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl, we ate lobster, drank piƱa coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over, and over?

Could I save money by getting a regular desktop and slapping a video card in it after the fact(assuming it meets prerequisites for power, mobo, etc)? I want to avoid, if possible, paying a premium for, say, a fancy case or the Alienware logo.

That's the issue, most anything targeted at a consumer-level type is going to have a power supply that will be nowhere near what you need.

How up for buying the parts and just having a friend build it for you? Best way to go if you're after saving money. Otherwise, you'll need to go with a prebuilt targeted at a gamer. I know iBuypower used to be decently priced, and I had one of their systems last for awhile, from when I used it to when I passed it down to my brother. Maybe a Dell XPS from Best Buy would be decent for what you want, too.

Then you can try to replace the Power Supply, but it's not standard and an OEM part won't fit.

Then you try to put in the video card, but there's a capacitor right where the heat sink is supposed to go.

Trust me, you don't want to just buy a random off the shelf PC and try to make it a gaming computer. Either buy one that's already got gaming credentials, or have someone build it for you.

Progress continues on my coffee-table rig.

Picked up a new (Slimmer) case to fit inside the end-drawer of the table; and had to convert my video card to a Low-profile setting to fit it inside the case.

Video is all set up at this point; running to both the projector and the coffee table's screen. Next step involves buying the capacitive touch screen, and integrating it with a new glass tabletop I'll have to have built.

Thinking of etching a mural of some kind into the glass around the screen-space to glow with the monitor's diffused light; but not sure about the extra ambient light interfering with the projector.

I'll toss pics up once I remember.
