I absolutely loved the movie serial aesthetic going on with HYDRA. They have ray guns, even! Ray guns! YES!
It does suffer a bit of Iron Man 2 syndrome; there are really a few more characters than needed, I think. Bucky's part could probably have been reduced or cut entirely, and while the appearance of the Howling Commandos made me pee a little, frankly they didn't do anything that couldn't have been done by some nameless extras. Though come to think of it, they basically were just nameless extras. Huh, maybe I'm being too hard on this movie. Anyway!
Howard Stark gets a pass because I assume the writers used him to set up Cap and Tony's relationship in The Avengers. Actually, how old is Tony Stark supposed to be in this continuity? Howard Stark is presumably around 30 in Captain America. Did he sire Tony when he was 60 years old or something? Or maybe this is his grandfather who will go on to his name son Howard Jr., I guess...? What the fuck is going on there?
The ending, which I won't spoil (though you can easily guess what it is), felt abrupt. I have a feeling it was supposed to be the stinger, but they bumped it up to make room for (very minor spoiler) a teaser trailer for The Avengers. That was a bit annoying, too; I was hoping to see (larger spoiler!) what happened to Red Skull. I mean, they get Hugo Weaving to play one of Marvel's most iconic archvillains and then kill him off for good in his first appearance? It can't be! D:
But hey, speaking of that stinger: No Wasp? No Ant-Man, or whatever he's called now? No Hulk?! Oh, man, please tell me I missed them. Or that they're being saved as a surprise! That'd be fine too! I hope they're in it, especially Hulk, what with his return being set up in the stinger of The Incredible Hulk a few years ago. Be kinda weird to leave him out now. "We're putting a team together. Not that it has anything to do with you. Just thought you'd like it. Well, bye!" Jeez.
So who else saw it?
