I stumbled upon the Girl Genius series while looking for 'tween-age comics for older girls in my after-school program; and am about halfway through that series. (It's really fucking long, and somehow pretty good.)
Anyone know other preferably long online comic series with a plot and characters? Not in the vein of Questionable Content, since every panel seems to include a punchline. Not saying it's bad by any means, just not what I'm after.
It's a daily updated "space opera", and as far as I know, the guy doing it hasn't missed a single daily update since he started in 2000.
Try to read that in a weekend. Tarquinn fucked around with this message on 04-11-2011 at 11:14 AM.
Quite lol-worthy. Oh, and incest.

Schlock is pretty great.
I've also started reading through Digger and it's been great so far.
You can check through the comics here; a number of them have ongoing stories. Phoenix Requiem was consistently in the top five until it ended recently. Overall the list is a mixed bag, but just skip the ones that don't appeal to you. If you sign up, you can build a favorites list to keep track of the ones you're reading. `Doc fucked around with this message on 04-11-2011 at 04:39 PM.
There's Dr McNinja for a mix of storytelling and humor, it's more comic-book style in that each issue addresses one story arc but it has continuity.
Boxer Hockey isn't too bad either.
The others that I read regularly are Freefall (Mentioned earlier), Freakangels (I was the one who pointed you to that, bitch), Schlock Mercenary, Sluggy Freelance, Gunnerkrigg court, and Girl Genius.
I keep trying to get into MSPA but I stall out early. I dunno.

WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME
Anyway, I guess if I want to read a comic with cool art that only updates once every three years, I could always go back to Outsider.
Seriously, the comic started like 10 years ago and it's only up to page 83. Jeez.
Finally, there's a comic I've plugged before: Spinnerette. It's an affectionate parody of superhero comics done in a manga-esque style. You probably shouldn't read it at work; it's not pornographic by any means, but it is rather cheesecakey.
Also finally, I second the motion of Order of the Stick. Pretty much one of the best comics on the internet despite its erratic updates.

Yay for GG! They just released a novel based on the first storyline, too.
