What awaits me there? Are there any good microbreweries on the East Coast? Will everyone speak twice as fast as me and my podunk Western ass? I need comparisons, tips, anything you have!
But Fairfax edging towards the South, and rural bliss isn't too far away so you won't find it as unappealing as, say, the Strong Island or other parts of the Godless Northeast.
Be careful on the roads, as VA drivers are especially bad. VA roads aren't too great, either.
Also, there's this weird, socialist contrivance in the cities known as "mass transit." It may seem archaic, but it's just one of those weird things we do out east.

I will not be worried too much about traffic, since I won't have a car. Fairfax seems to have a decent bus system, and I can use the metro to get out to George Mason's satellite campuses.

Glad to hear there are plenty of microbrews. I was worried I would have to just drink Sam Adams all the time.
Depending on your area, it would not be out of the question to find a local bar that does casks and stuff like that.

I tend to think of Virginia as "that hellish non-state commonwealth cesspit that ate four years of my life."
Charlottesville is kind of a ghetto, though. I'd advise taking self-defense classes (though, this is really just good advice for living on your own anywhere).
Expect on the upside:
-More outgoing people
-Lots of outdoor stuff to do
-Good steak
On the downside:
-People mispronouncing "Rio" and "Verde"
-No good Mexican
-Rape
Only maneating demons live there.
Classic buildings, a good transportation system, and plenty to do. Just use common sense and stay away from the very bad areas.
edit: Staying away from places that will get you mugged/shot is a much wiser idea than relying on self defense classes, even if you are UFC level. Ghost of Forums Past fucked around with this message on 08-14-2009 at 08:33 PM.

Speaking as someone who lived in New England for almost all of his life and flies to Virginia a couple times a year, I can say the attitudes of people from New England and DC/Virginia are rather similar.
Don't expect southern hospitality, but don't expect southern slowness either. Ghost of Forums Past fucked around with this message on 08-14-2009 at 08:41 PM.

Worrying that there won't be any microbreweries in one of the original 13 colonies is a little like worrying that you might not find any poverty in Africa.

To be fair, Colorado and Montana lead the nation in microbrews per capita.

He always gets really upset when I say "Joisey" or "New Yawk."
This is offensive to him.
Calling it "Jew York" is not, apparently.
