Topic: Those whey protein powders

I'm in the process of losing weight. I've been working out everyday (cardio during the week, weights on weekends) and eating right (about 2500 calories a day). I've been steadily losing 1 pound a week. I haven't been taking any supplements other than a calcium pill.

I don't want to be just thin, but I also don't want to be Biggs McLargehuge. I just want definition. Would those protein powders help? I ask because I really don't know how protein affects the body. I just know it 'makes more muscle'. Would it speed up my metabolism to burn more calories?

Protein powders are used to provide more protein for your muscles to grab when they're building themselves up. It doesn't do anything metabolically I think, aside from the fact that muscle mass ups your basal rate inherently. Building "definition" is really just either increasing the size of the muscles or decreasing your body fat percentage.

A low carb, protein rich diet would effectively help to increase your metabolism, as mentioned.

Look, I don't need to write a fitness book to explain this to you: simply put, it's a cheap and plentiful source of clean protein, so scarf it down often.

You wanting to increase muscle mass is another story altogether and is a bit more involved then eating protein.

Definition isn't as much about increasing protein as it is about decreasing fat, both in your diet and your body. A high protein, low fat diet is a way to reduce your bodyfat, which will allow your muscle definiton to show.

I love how a good majority of people think the key to getting abs is just doing a shit load of sit ups, and they'll eventually emerge.

If you keep your metabolism high, you can pretty much eat what you want. I eat pizza and ice cream (not every day) and I'm ripped.

You only need a tailored diet if you're in competition or are out of competition but really vain.
