They serve no purpose other than to not allow me to play random games from five years ago that I find in the bottom of my closet and get excited because, hey, I'd like to play that again until I realize the manual/original case/whatever had the CD key on it is long lost and all the ones you find in search engines online from four years ago have been disabled and/or never worked to begin with.

Step 2: Write the CD Key on the front of the install disk.
Step 3: There is no Step 3.

This might just be me, but I don't think I could write "ABCDE-12345-PLSDK-AM23Z-ZM925" small enough to fit on the face of a disc

e: write that in sharpie, that is
