But fuck them, right? I'll get a job working for a poor man instead.
Well, maybe just pretty rich instead of insanely rich. But I'm sure the rich guy will feel pretty poor. Oh well.

Could be a big problem if the rest of the world doesn't follow suit.
Should be made to exempt property and companies, but come on, I'm not crying over some heiress getting 60% of their daddy's billions upon billions of dollars instead of the whole thing.
The top 5% of this country pay a disproportionally smaller potion of taxes in relation to the wealth they control compared to the bottom 90%. With the top 1% to bottom 99%, it is an even starker difference.
I'm in favor of simplifying the tax code and decreasing rates in general, but if you look at the wealth controlled to taxes paid ratios, it is obviously apparent that the very-rich could afford a small income tax hike on the order of 4-5% on all earnings past $500,000 a year and a 3-4% hike on earnings past $250,000 a year (non cumulative) without any measurable impact on their lifestyles.
Unions aren't needed anymore, but I think it's stupid to think that when over 50% of your workers decide that it is in their best interest to sign a union card the outcome of a secret ballot would be any different. Obviously, situations like this need to be screened for improper union coercion, but that goes for any union establishment already.
Meh. The tax code shouldn't have loopholes, it makes things easier on everyone.

The largest tax in the history of mankind, a tax that affects the poor the most, doesn't concern you?

So you care more about sympathy than principle?

In order to view this as unjust, you must first assume that they aren't entitled to that wealth and did nothing to produce it. Maradon! fucked around with this message on 04-15-2009 at 10:23 PM.

Yeah not seeing it. If you control 40% of the wealth you should cover 40% of the cost of the government that made that wealth possible. Anything less or more is not just.
And as far as carbon tax, "the largest tax in the history of mankind" is currently estimated at 34 cents per ton of CO2 gas emitted. Blindy. fucked around with this message on 04-15-2009 at 11:04 PM.

But you also have to recognize that their country provided them with opportunities to acquire that wealth, and as such they could be considered to have a responsibility to reinvest in said country to a higher degree than others who did not take advantage of those opportunities.

For some things, everyone should pay taxes, like roads and schools. Smart businesses have an interest in the future employees that come out of public schools so maybe they should have an increase responsibility by way of slightly increased taxes.
If everyone paid taxes, maybe everyone would wake up and pay more attention to where those taxes go and less of our public funds would be put towards frivolous uses.

If only wealthy people pay taxes, should they have exclusive use of the roads, schools, and National Parks that are funded by those taxes? Should only those who pay taxes dictate how government functions? For some things, everyone should pay taxes, like roads and schools. That last part is definitely the rub. I believe that those who take advantage of opportunities should put more in, but it has to be tempered with responsible usage of the revenue the government receives from its taxpayers. There's no point to having a higher contribution if it's just going to be wasted away.
