Alright, I just got a new computer as an early Christmas gift from my roommate. It's currently running on onboard video, and I'd like to save up and get a real video card for it. I'm a poor fellow who doesn't often have money for new computer hardware, and I therefore tend to be pretty behind the times on the video card market.

So, what I want to know is, any suggestions on PCI Express videocards that balance power with affordability? I'm looking for the <$200 range, preferrably around $150.

Suggestions?

The nVidia GeForce 8600 should be around that price, and it's pretty decent.

it's worth the extra money, but if you're that poor, get a 4850

Well, the Nvidia is a bit more in my price range... because I really am somewhat poor... but I really would prefer a card that will be quite worth the money, so if I have to save up an extra week or two to get $200 to $240 to get something that's going to keep me up to speed for a good while, then so be it.
