Last week, I was informed on Thursday that I would not be hired by the company that bought the storage place I've managed for the last five years; Wednesday was my last day of work. Given that I live in east county San Diego, I'm thinking comparable jobs are going to be hard to find right now. What I want to know from EC is if any of you know of any good ways to get a resume out where employers can see it. I've already got mine posted up on monster.com, careerbuilder.com, and jobing.com as well as CalJobs (the unemployment department website). Are there any other options to consider?

Look for jobs in the news paper classifieds and on job posting sites and make it a point to apply for at least one job per day, if not more. Who cares if you're not strictly qualified, you may hit pay dirt.

Too many people think that all you should have to do to find a job is post your resume online and wait for the phone calls to come in- more often than not (and I can say this, because I'm trying to hire two people right now), we'd rather get your resume and application than go though page after page of resumes and waste our time trying to get in contact with someone who may not even be interested in our company.

UPS, Fedex and DHL are always hiring, especially leading into the holiday season.

I'd never thought of these, though I've heard UPS is good to work for.

Hope you like busting your ass because that's what you'll be doing by dropping your resume in now during Christmas season. Yes it is considered christmas season in October.

Given that I'm about 80 pounds overweight, it couldn't hurt.

Well then drop your resume in and you will probably get it pretty quick. Now's the time they start making temporary runs for cleaning up freight so people from the dock go to there and they need to be replaced.

Suggestions:
Resume
Talk to your folks, have them look over your resume. Post it on something awful to be critiqued if you've got the balls. Use your contacts and resources to get it polished. For me, this was what made finding a job easy as hell.

Networking
Talk to your friends. See if they have any friends that know of an opening. Ask around in your field. This is a very powerful tool. A surprisingly large percentage of jobs are obtained this way.

Craigslist
I got my past two jobs through craigslist. 'nough said.

Headhunters
A lot of job postings out there are from headhunters. This means the job postings may be a simple bait and switch. This can be a good thing if you apply for a job then get a reply with 20 others that you may be qualified for.

Most headhunters are lying scumbags, but if you can find a good one they'll open up a huge door of opportunity for you. The more you get paid the more the headhunter gets paid. A good headhunter will give you a list of jobs based on your abilities and wants. A good headhunter will know the personalities of the people you will talk to during interviews. He/She will tell you what to expect ahead of time. A good headhunter will know the company's reputation and stability. He/she will help negotiate for a better pay if you are bad at negotiating.

Bad headhunters are worse than used car salesman. I had one offer that went through a bad headhunter. The headhunter told me there was $15k+ of benefits that simply didn't exist. He lied through his teeth. I called the company to ask for it in writing and I found him out red handed. The same guy sent me to companies that I had no business going to. He even sent me to some that weren't even expecting an interview. Others would have had an unacceptable commute. He just threw me at random listings at my field without caring hoping one would bite and he'd get some money. He'd lie to everyone to get it.

Note that even with a good headhunter you'll have a smaller max cap in salary because the company has to pay the headhunter too.

If a headhunter wants you to use him and only him, he's a scumbag by default.

Never ever ever ever pay a headhunter yourself. That's the company's problem.

Records
Excel sheets. Keep track of everything. Who you talked to, who said what, etc. There's more jobs than you think out there, even with this economy.

Positive attitude
Nobody wants to hire someone who's depressed. If you go in with an objective attitude and a good head on your shoulders, you'll do fine.

Questions:
Did you graduate college? Are you currently attending college? If so, what was your major?

What is your long term career goal?

Do you have any dependents or mortgages?

How old are you?

How long can you afford to be unemployed?

Don't forget your local job search agency. I don't know what it's called in San Diego County, but every county has a job agency that posts jobs from all sources, and many employers hire only through them. They can help with resumes, applications, typing certificates, interviews, temporary employment agency liaisons, and employment prescreening.

Also, don't sit and wait for a callback. Be diligent and show up at the place you apply to several times per week. Get your name and face known to the managers. Don't stop until you get told yes or no by a manager. Be persistent and show that you really want to work.

If the hiring process comes down to two resumes, and one of them is a guy that the person hiring has never seen before, and the other is "that guy that's always here trying to get a job" guess who they're gonna pick.

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl, we ate lobster, drank piña coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over, and over?

I wish I had a means for doing this with some of the listings I've responded to. Unfortunately, they've all either been faceless companies (didn't list a company name or location in the ad) or out-of-town corporations.

The guy who doesn't annoy the shit out of them and take time out of their work day to tell him for the ninth time that they'll call him.

If it takes nine times then it's the manager's own fault for not telling you that they aren't going to hire you. Which is the case if you haven't gotten a more positive response after 9+ days of follow-ups.

I've never gotten a job by waiting around for someone to call me back. I have gotten jobs for being persistent and showing my will to work.

Or...They process background/Identity Verification in batches. Also when I Had underlings in the past no matter how many calls, would wait out a span unless I happen to see a starling App and interview, And generally if you happen to be that, you get the offer that day. Usually the 2nd biggest factor outside of your Experience, will be just how badly the job needs to get filled.

Also I am not saying not to call back, just not every fricking hour.

---In Addition, for the Unemployment Insurance it self, waste no time applying for it, If California is like the NJ process, you can expect it to take no less than 2 weeks before you get the first check.

I applied for unemployment the day I found out I was unemployed; that was the first and, while I've seen paperwork, I haven't seen a check yet.

That aside, I've done some investigation into job training and found a small institution that offers training that culiminates in a certification I think was called the CNST or CNCT. It's a general electronics certification that was originally designed to be equivalent to or better than A+. I'm given to understand from one of the instructors that, with what I learn from the course, I could take the assessment to get the A+ and probably pass should I so desire. In addition, this place does job placement and offers help with resume writing and interviewing as part of the course. Is this a valuable course of action? Would this kind of certification offer me good opportunities in terms of getting my foot in the door some place and setting myself up for further advancement?

Also if you Haven't even picked up a part time job to fill the void, you might want to check the state laws for your UI before takeing that training, If it isn't under their guide lines, they might refuse your claim.

I actually got the institution from the EDD website and their financial aid people said I can claim unemployment while I train there.
