I also got banned/unbanned like 5 times last night. Basically I'm not banned because of irc. That, and I'm awesome
Rather than trying to salvage this forum, personally I'd rather set up a phpBB on one of my domains and just move there. We wouldn't have all the old topics and whatnot but at least it'd be an up-to-date forum codebase with an administrator that still visits more than once every 2 years.

SA is just plain full of boring, snotty people. The old 4chan adage is true: SA is stupid people acting smart.
If "being called on one's shit" consists of ad hominem from multiple posters directed toward anyone who dares express an opinion other than the collective consensus of the board, then yeah I guess you could say that happens an awful lot there. I can't say it's ever happened to me, because I've never cared enough to post much.
LF and the other political boards are a joke. I've never seen people trying so hard to be assholes without doing so in a manner that could be perceived as bannable. The goon political boards are, if nothing else, where their collective consensus originates and is enforced and dissenters are weeded out.
